Hello.
I have a 95 Ex Coupe and ever since I have had this car ive noticed 3rd grinded a little bit. Now since I've had my B&M Short Shifter in it has gotten a little bit worse. Also keep in mind I don't know alot about the inside of a transmission. Now what part is it that is making it grind what would need to be replaced? Also is it even worth replacing or should I just buy a new transmission. I've heard this to be common among civic's or no?

Tranny's going bad, I think it's called the syncro something in your tranny.

 

It's the 3rd gear synchro (short for synchronizer). It helps match the speed of the gear to the input / output shafts of the tranny so that you can shift without having to rev match.

It's an expensive peice to replace, and is pretty labor intensive (pulling tranny and dissasembling gearsets). Try GM synchromesh tranny fluid to see if it will help with the grinding.

This is good, and could work. However, it's only a band-aid. If you plan to keep the car for awhile and you drive it somewhat hard, it will eventually need to be replaced.

Its common amoung manual transmissions.

Might just be due for a rebuild.

did you by chance convert it from auto to manual? when i swapped mine the short shifter grinded so i put a stock one back in and no more problem.

 

hey man , ive got a 95 ex too, noticed the same thing, asked around a little bit, and it turns out that unless you have a pretty much perfect shift, when you're gettin on it, its gonna grind into 3rd. be careful if racing cause itd be a little embarrassing to grind third and end up missin the gear altogether. just wanted to let ya know its not just ur car...happens to pretty much all 95s, etc, after 60,000 miles.

Yes, that is what I figured ever since I've had the car it grinds 3rd gear. But ive only grinded once or twice when racing as long as you perfect shift it doesnt grind and it goes in smooth.

You need to get GM Synchromesh Friction Modified. The regular GM Synchromesh is basically almost the same as Honda MTF and you won't really see any difference. Friction Modified is the fluid you want.
