Gears are going out. Try doing a tranny flush and see how that goes if that doesnt help then start looking into a new tranny before you loose 3rd.

Lots of different things could be happening. User error. Previous owner abused the vehicle. Low on tranny fluid or wrong fluid? In any case start looking for a new tranny like Luserkid said. It will go out sooner or later. You can probably sell it for a couple hundred to a transmission repair shop to gain some money back for the next tranny you get.

First why dont you flush the tranny fluid in there and try GM "friction modified" synchromesh. It works....I love it....

It's probably your gear selector gear that is bad. It goes bad from missing third gear when shifting and it will grind your gear selector. I wish I had a picture of it to show you exactly what I'm talking about. I just tore my tranny apart in to replace the main input shaft bearing and I checked the third gear selector "gear", because third gear was also grinding for me, and the teeth are worn down. As well my third gear is worn. It's about 200 bucks to replace both of them. As far as flushing your tranny fluid, go for it. It can't hurt anything.

It could be the clutch, i had a cheap clutch made, it was perfect, until about 3 months in to use one of the bronze plates moved about 3 mm on one side. My 3rd grinded until i changed the clutch again.
