how soon should I cange my oil after switching to synthetic?
I heard after switching to synthetic from regular you should change the oil fairy soon because of the the remaining old oil possibly becoming sludgy. Is this true and how soon should I change it?
I have 40k on my civic now.

i would change every 1500 to 2000 miles...reg oil change is 3000 miles or three months...so if u want to keep that bitch clean...then go with what i said...also u can do a seafoam to get out all tha other stuff too...go to any local napa auto parts store or to any auto zone...follow tha directions to a t!!!!!

Just change it based on the normal service intervals indicated in your manual. No need to do anything special.

i run synthetic in my car. no reason to run synth. if you are not going to take advantage of the longer intervals.
i run amsoil 10-40 w/ purolator pure one filters. every 5,000 miles i spin off the filter, spin a new one on and top off the oil.
i have a stock d16z6. if i was turbo'd i'd do a full oil change @ 4k intervals...

The oil change service interval in my manual is 5000 miles and a filter change every other time. It's 3750 miles for severe duty. For the 7th gens, they extended it to 7500/5000. I think that's long enough to go without changing the oil.
Oil (conventional or syn) doesn't lose it's lubricity when in the motor; the reason for changing it is to flush all the crap out. And filters don't remove disolved particles in the oil that can make it more acidic and corrosive to the parts of your engine.

the question is, when changing to synth, should the first synth change be done quickly to flush out the old regular remains?

You just top it off...so you don't even drain what's in the pan you just remove the filter and replace it and "top it off"? I would not give that suggestion out, just drain whats in there and replace it with fresh oil.

I switched to Mobil 1 last spring. I went 10,000 miles before I drained and changed the filter a month ago. 90K on the engine. Never added a drop over the 10K. 60 mile daily commute. If your oil gets over 212 degrees every time your engine runs the longer interval is fine. If you make lots of short trips in town and your oil never gets over 212 degrees, change it more often.
Is it true or not that if you switch from non-synthetic oil to full synthetic, you should use synthetic blend/semi-synthetic first, then full synthetic?
I am not sure if that makes a big difference. The problem is, I could not find 5w-20 in a blend, only the full syth mobile one. I am trying to find out if since I went full synth from full reg. if I should change it sooner than normal to flush out any crap in there left from the regular.
I would change the oil after 2k like everyone else here said for the next couple oil changes just to make sure you have all the old out. After that, use Amsoil, everything else sucks. Amsoil garauntees twice the mileage of whatever you're using now [10,000 miles if honda says 5] and instead of changing it, you can have it analyzed and determine whether or not it needs to be changed. This garauntee only applies if you use their filter which is badass anyway [still haven't figured out who makes the filter for them though]. I sell Amsoil all day long at work and haven't heard a single negative comment, use it myself

What store do you work for? Is Amsoil sold at Autozone, Pep Boys and all those common places?

I work in a motorcycle shop and buy all my oil there, never had to find it. pick up the phone book and let your fingers do the walking

i know that. i was making a point. you don't need to have a shorter interval when you swap over to synthetic. you are just throwing your money away if you do...
straight from the Amsoil site:
Are AMSOIL Motor Oils compatible with other motor oils?
Yes. AMSOIL Motor Oils are compatible with all other synthetic or petroleum motor oils
from the Mobil1 site:
Can different synthetic motor oils be mixed together?
Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ is fully compatible with conventional motor oils, semi-synthetic motor oils and other synthetic motor oils, should it be necessary to mix them. But the superior performance of Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ will be reduced by diluting it.
again, doing a short drain interval after first switching over to synthetic will accomplish nothing more than wasting time and money. do what you want.

if any crap in there is a concern, then change just the filter at a shorther interval. that is exactly where the crap will be anyway. that is going on the premis that synth. oil breaks down more soild particulate matter inside your engine that has built up over time. no reason to dump all of the oil tho...

I thought I'd let my fingers do the walking on H-T first, lol.
