Default LS/Vtec Idle Bombing and Surging

I just put a new head gasket on my ls with b16 head. It runs fine in town when you keep the rpms low but as soon as I take it out on the highway it runs weak then really good (no its not when the vtec kicks in, sometimes it still runs weak through the vtec) and then when i come to a stop the idle drops real low and sometimes it even dies. Any ideas?

how is your distributor timing? is it advanced? retarted? i have noticed that alot of b series motors like the timing advanced just a hair on the distributor my friend had the same problem, he had no power,and i moved his distributor from lined up in the middle to the distributor turned toward the firewall..

you will see when you look at the top bolt there usually is 2 gaps between the bolt on the ear of the distributor, all i do is cover the gap in the front of the bolt and that usually takes care of it

you need tuning. Obviously. And bad air fuel ratio (rich or lean) will cause unstable idle as well
