Hybrid VTEC Question

Hybrid VTEC Question
I just put a B16a into my 94 civic coupe. So much better than stock..... 
Anyways I've noticed that sometimes under hard acceleration the check engine light comes on. Today I noticed that after the check engine light came on the VTEC quit working. After you shut the car off and turn it back on the light goes off and everything is normal. I have yet to do a timing job on it and I know it needs it. I'm just not sure what is the problem with it. Also I noticed that the launches are slow. Would that be because of the timing?
O yes and I forgot. I spliced the distributer wires if that has anything to do with it.
