How do I know for sure that my p72 gsr ecu is odb-1 or obd-2???
My check engine light is still on in my 92 civic hatch with 95 gsr motor in it. The check engine light is still on. I heard that there is obd-1, and obd-2 P72 ecu's.
How do I know for sure that mine IS obd-1????

If you were able to plug your 92 civic wiring harness into it (without a conversion harness), then I'm 100% sure it's ODBI.
There are pics floating around of the difference between the ODBI and ODBII plugs, but I'm too lazy to go look for them.

most likely ur check engine light is still on because you havent wired some of the gsr wiring up.

The ecu harnesses are very different. Is the car throwing codes?

Well if you are throwing codes its most likely your wiring. But to check if your ECU is OBD-I
1. refer to pic. It should have the Denishkagan or whattever label - funny german name.

yup. it has the funny name thingy on it. But there is a lot wrong with the car. I wired the knock sensor, which from what I heard, is the only thing I need to do. I have a 92 civic VX, so it has vtec wires already. I dunno. selling car for $5000

Did you wire the knock sensor up using shielded wire? If not, then that's one problem that needs fixed. Using standard wire or even a wire from an engine harness will not always work right if it's not a shielded wire. The knock sensor needs this shielded wire so it doesn't pick up electrical interference's which will make then sensor think there is a "knock." You can get it at Radio Shack or some parts stores. You can also shield a standard wire with aluminum foil then braid a wire around it and ground it somewhere - simple fix but ghetto.

You should also jump the connector under the passenger side of your dash to see which code is being displayed. That's the best way to troubleshoot and problems that involve a check engine light. Don't be surprised though if you fix the first problem then another code appears. They are stored in the ecu memory one at a time - usually in the order of most to least important.

I did use a stranded wire. I used a knock sensor wire off an old b16a wire harness I had. Do I need to ground the stranded part of the wire? Or is it just enough thats its stranded. Let me know. Thanx.

Yes, you should ground the braided wire and that should do the trick. That is how they are in the factory harness - the wires intersect throughout the harness and go to one or two common grounds. They are mainly used for the O2 sensor, knock sensor, TDC, etc. to shield out electrical interference. The ground surrounds the inner wire with negative polarity which cancels out any surrounding positive fields.
