Default h22 eg woes... please help!

here's the rundown...

95 civic coupe
jdm h22a

got everything all together tonight. turned the key... motor turned over, and made some hesitating noises.

realized the plug wires were in wrong (checked helms) plugged them in right, and it started up on the first crank.

since it was late, and its open header, we only let it run for a few seconds.

some of our friends got there about 10 minutes later, and we wanted to show them our accomplishments, cranked it, but it wont start.

now there's no spark.

also, the starter squeals once in a while too, not sure if its related.

my guess is battery, because it was dying, and now its completely dead.

but i'm sure it could also be a ignition problem.

took off the dist cover, and the thing spins.

not sure what could be wrong. please help!

Sounds to me that you just need to charge the battery and reset the ecu. You did change the wires, plugs, cap and rotor right??? If so and everything is wired right you should be ready to go. Also you need to check all grounds. Check the starter ground, the thermo housing ground and the valve cover ground. After youve checked all that is should be ready to go. Good luck. Keep us posted.

yea i thought it was the battery from the get go. my d16 starter used to do that when the battery was about to die.

is resetting the ecu needed? why does that make a difference? not a big deal to do, but i dont see why i'd have to.

also, when i started it the first time, i was using the p28 ecu. only threw one code (41-o2 sensor) so can i use the p28 without problems? or do i have to chip the p28? or will it be better since theres no egr or knock codes to throw?

i have a p13, but its auto and i havn't gotten it chipped yet.

yes i did change the plugs and wires, but not the cap and rotor... didnt touch anything in that dept.

if a ground wasnt connected the fuel pump wont pump right? that was a different problem we had. but solved that.

You can use your auto p13. It doesnt matter. I had one and it worked fine. I have read of some people using the stock p28 but personally I wouldnt drive around on it since the timing and fuel maps are no where near comparable to your engine specs..

now, lets just hope this really is a battery issue.

Sounds like the coil might have gone bad. Check the ignition coil and see if it tests out all right.

I would also check the module in the distributer. Its that metal piece that the 3 sensors plug into. That is what went bad in mine resulting in my car not starting. I simply replaced it with the one from my old distributer.

Sounds like something simple. I would definitely charge up the battery.

Once the battery is charged, try cranking it over. If it still doesn't crank, check for spark again.

Also make sure your motor as secure and good grounds!

Keep us posted.

also dont forget that the main relay on the EG's like to stop working from time to time. If for whatever reason your not getting fuel check the main relay.

yes, if the main relay or the ecu is faulty, the CEL will remain on when the key in the ON position.

in normal conditions, the CEL goes off after 2 seconds. Verify your fuel pump is turning on as well.

tried jumping it, but didn't try as hard as i wanted. my friend was being an ***. so i dont think the jumping was helping.

i'll have to check the dist, and coil. any pics of exactly what you're talking about?

oh, and we have an amazing new problem. for some godforsaken reason, when i put the ignition ON the parking lights turn on. THATS fucked up. didnt touch ANYTHING that could ever cause that.

no CELs by the way. i'm getting fuel, thats no problem.

this dudes swapper ^ ... cars at my garage... soo my guess is either battery dist. or coil... either of the three should be much of a problem to fix by the end of the night ( just in time for HT meet tomarrow mornin)

-K all the grounds are good
-fuel pump and relay work fine
-CEL goes off after a second

i have 2 spare dist. a friend will let us borrow... one being a 99 h22 obd2 dist. and the other being a 96 h23 obd2 dist. SUX both are obd2 and we are dealing with an obd1 car.. anywoo... will one of these babbies do the trick, asusming i have to rewire sumthing to make them work (0bd1->0bd2) ? also if its just a coil issue will one of the obd2 coils work? or are both external cloils like the 0bd1 USDM h22's ?

im tired and i know what im saying is probably confusing someone out there...so if anyone can help or if anyone has obd1 h22 dist and are within driving distance of CT (2-3 hours) please get back to me... or even better yet please call me. i will be at the garage all night screwing with this thing so chances are i wont have access to check the posts...

one last question... is there anything else that will prvent us from having spark, like a saftey feature for instance...or maybe theres a ground i dont know about or anything at all that would disable the output of spark ?

thanks guys

john

woot woot it was the coil ! now, to solve the erratic idle problem.
and to strap up a exhaust... any incites on the idle? im thinking tps adjustment... also possibly because there is no thermostat, apparently the JDM thermo is a little heftier then our here US thermo's. Any comments or helpful hints...post um thanks guys

current problems:

IDLE - maybe TPS, or lack of thermostat??

first gear & 5th gear: maybe a bushing and cable adjustment. goes in sometimes. but the cables dont move properly because they were missing a bushing...

car stalls when you let it idle. is this alternator?

ill have to check. not sure at the moment.

i should probably mention that my oil pressure gauge hose blew off and 5qts of oil just LEFT the motor. that happened right down the street from ym friends house so we didnt drive anymore than like 40 feet. we plugged the hole.
