Default BAR/smog problem - '98 ITR in an '00 EK

I am buying an '00 EK with a stock '98 USDM ITR, I know I can't get a BAR sticker cuz the motor is for an earlier year than the car. I need to know, if I change the block (not the head)and ECU to a 2000 USDM ITR will it pass and get me a BAR sticker? IS there anything else I would have to change? The engine is out of a 98 usdm ITR so I dont think I would need to change much else . . . any help you guys can provide is appreciated!

On your engine there is a VIN number and they are going to run that VIN number to make sure it is the same or newer year motor for your car. So unless you rip off the VIN number and say it's JDM motor i don't think it iwll pass smog..

that won't work since the cylinder head has a year stamped on it. you have to have the 00' usdm itr head, block, and ecu to make it pass smog through the smog ref.

btw why don't you get a 98' EK, that way you don't have to deal with the BS swapping and probably save you ALOT of money and time. work smarter not harder.

Honestly, I would love to get a 98 but the one I am buying is exactly what I want: itr suspension, drivetrain, and interior on a clean EK. I am selling my 97 coupe so I can pay for the ek. The only problem is the smog/bar issue becuase i am buying it from out of state and bringing it back to cali. I just need to figure out a time and cost effective solution to that problem. I am graduating from college and working full time so I have the ability to work for what I want but I lack the time to work on it myself (and be without a car) or swapping everything out would be a viable option. ANY help you guys can provide would really help. Thanks.

i smogged m 97 gsr motor as a 94. the block still had the vin numbers and the head was stamped 97 and they said nothing.

Car is a 94 hatch.

Just change the ecu to a 2000, you'll have to get the immobolizer removed, and take it in and tell them it is a 2000. worked for me i dont see why it wont work for you.

i failed the first time from a bad cat and had to take it again so i dont think the vin or stamp on the head matters. The only vin they can see is the one on the tranny and that doesnt mean much cause you can say the tranny is from a different car. The other vin is covered by the header.

EDIT: car was BAR certified by ref.

Worst case scenario just buy a stock 98 and move all the parts over then sell the 2000 as stock.

I know it would be kind of a pain in the ***, but if you were willing to change blocks I am thinking you are willing to go the extra mile? If the 2000 is that great of a deal with the parts included it might be worth the time.

Anyhow, what do I know? I don't even live in California
