Screen in Dash!
i think that little hole to adjust the clock would bother me.
Did you buy the sunvisor thingy off http://www.mp3playerstore.com?

I forgot the store I got my visor from (it was online). Its a nesa vision monitor cost about $200 very nice for the price.
Some people get bothered but once you get into the movie you dont notice it...I never notice the little hole anymore.
And it beats tearing the whole damn dash apart.

i got my screen for 120 bucks shipped, it's really nice....i'll see if i can hit all the questions:
1. yea it's pretty much the same height because it's widescreen...meaning it's longer than it is just a box...however the top gets a tad cut off...but i'm talkin millimeters.....
2. i had to cut the black plastic off of the back of the smoked peice of plastic. however it's smoked enough you cant see any of the crap back there besides what is lighting up
3. the clock hole is hardly even noticable

sorry dude, just one final question for you, when you buy an LCD screen in comes in a casing, did you remove the actual screen from its borders so its bare like this
VVVVVVVVVVV

Not to mention having it behind the dash is just about the sickest thing ever for the 4th gen.
When you think about it, not many people have seen it before and it is a vehicle specific thing so nobody can rip off your style.
Just work around how you want it, take your time and everything will turn out well. Dont rush seperating the plastic, if you do it good enough the two peices can be glued back together if you ever wish to sell the car.

hey AO you live in washington? So do i! You should help me out with this hahaha. I cant see your pictures though.
Have you done the dash screen before? Or you just did the sunvisor ones? Send me pics and i'll post em for you.

Yea, Im in edmonds about 15min north of Seattle.
If you copy paste the pics will work, im still pretty new here so I havent worked out all the tricks yet.
It honestly isnt hard to do, it seems like it but its not. There is maybe a whole inch of space before the smoked glass part starts (when the dash is complete) that will hide the stand for the monitor. I can tell you exactly what to do, and you can try it, but you shouldnt really need any help if you understand the basics of how to hook up the monitor.
I have only done it once to my car with my sunvisor screen and if I did it again I would have just got a monitor with the stand. The thing is if you want a widescreen monitor be prepared to do a little fabrication.
If you really got skills you could do a fiberglass mount for it, but that would take a lot of time. Mine is peices of plastic, a cardboard backing and super glue
But it isnt seen so im not too worried.

AO,
Why didnt you mount the monitor over an inch and keep the clock adjuster - it seems like there is enough room so that you dont have to live with seeing the clock hole.
Very nice install, I will be doing something similar with a carpc as well.

i plan on going the carpc route too - just makes so much sense these days - you get gps/mp3/dvd/mobile internet access etc etc. - phoenix gold also makes a 5.1 amp with optical so with any soundcard with toslink you're set for 5.1 dvds. rikaline usb gps's are only 60 bones.. only prob for me is deciding where to mount the comp, and gps antenna (blah), and whether to go with dc - inverter dc - or one of those special straight dc power supplies.

i am in the process of building my own, def. do the DIY route too, saves a ton of money than just buying the "carpc" flat out.

I didnt mount it over because I used the lil box that was there to make a holder to set the monitor into place. So the mounting tabs for the white box are glued to the side of the monitor shroud and then screwed back into place to hold the monitor there.
The clock adjuster screws into the back of the black peice of plastic that is removed from the smoked clear peice. So even if it were there it would just be loose and fall. I can still plug it in really quick and adjust the time if I ever need too.

So if I was to install a similar sized monitor only further over, I could retain the clock adjuster and not have a small hole visible? I would just need to find a different mounting solution?
I would not remove the whole of the black plastic from the back of the smoked piece, I would just remove part of it to show the screen.

Well you could do that but you would have to really measure the monitor and space and come up with something pretty creative as to how it will be held in there. The monitor would most likely be pretty small as well. I guess essentially you could remove the black peice cut off the space you need and put it back on.
The thing is in the other pics (I believe) when you move the whole dash gauge display over you cannot have the clock adjuster in since it mounts in a specific place. It just isnt visible since everything is black.

where were you planning on putting the comp? I'm thinking either trunk - or if i can find a case small enough I might put it under that backseat armrest (i haven't looked myself but i've heard there is some room if you take out the lining), I want to have usbs (from like 4 port hub) poke out in that center console pocket behind the e-brake. I plan on a 7" touchscreen lilliput but i'm going to mounting in regular stereo above ashtray hole - bad for theives - but i'll have to see how it will go. I already have a spare comp - so its' really a no brainer - it's not a mini-itx though so it's prob pretty power intensive and I really really have to find a smaller case for it (or make one).
Damn those are some sweet lude dash's. A friend of mine who had a UKDM lude had a screen already fitted to the far side but didnt work and wasnt very clean looking.
You guys should do a little writeup on your own methods of mounting the screen.
If I do this to mine I'd use 'Polymorf' plastic granules to create a holder for the screen with mounting tabs. If you can get that stuff in the states?
you just add boiling water the the granules, knead them in the bowl of water, then they go clear and the you squeeze the water out of them and shape them to what you want, then it sets solid.
I used this polymorf stuff to make a plastic handle and screwdriver guide for my valve lash tool. I'll post pics to show what I mean laterz. Its ideal for making a mounting braket!

Does anyone know what the next smaller size would be for a widescreen after the 7.2 inch? 6 inch?

Those who are thinking about the Car PC route, are you considering VGA monitors only or are you going to get just composite video screens and run TV-Out to them?
I am having trouble finding a 5inch widescreen VGA monitor.
