need help with my overheating b16 swapped 88 si civic!!
im jus wonderin, would a bad thermostat cause the check engine light 2 come on??.. i bought my si a couple months ago n it ran fine. then all of a sudden it started heatin up on me like krazy n now its drivin me krazy! I hate to c it sittin there but cant help it cuz $ is tight right now... im kind of leanin towards that the head gasketmight b out? i keep filling up the radiator with anitfreeze but wen i go bak to check it, it seems to b empty so im left clueless. the water pump is not leaking at all n theres no signs of there being a hole in my hoses n the radiator is in great shape.. but jus wonderin if any1 has had to deal with something similiar 2 this.. so id appreciate the help!

has the system been bled?? have you changed the thermostat? does the heater blow hot air when you turn the heat on? have you pulled the cel code? do your fans turn on?after all that a leak down test would confirm blown head gasket...

Buy the tester off eBay for around $40 and do it yourself. It will be cheaper than taking it to a shop, plus you will have to tool for future problems.

depends on what your local mechanic wants to rape you on the bill...you can google it and buy the tester and diy. do the cheap fix first, pull the cel code, change the thermo, flush the system/bleed it, also do the heater trick check to see if you got hot air blowing out your heater when the car is heating up, if its luke warm it could be air in the system or a waterpump going bad.

check the faq's put the key to the on position and look at the ecu there should be a blinking light, long flashes stand for ten short flashes for one.

Is your car OBD-0 or OBD-1?
If it is OBD-0 then pull the carpet and plate (if its there LoL) and just watch the L.E.D. blink short flashes are 1s and long flashes are 10s. (You have to have the key in the 2 position or you can just start the car.)
This may help a little... if the L.E.D. goes (-----) (-----) (--) Then it is code 21.
There can be more than one code, and after it has flashed them all then it will repeat itself.

whats the code though. it could not even have anything to do with your overheating problem. only thing i nkow would have anything to do w/ temp. is a code 6 which is collant temp sensor. and a pressure test at my work is like 60 bucks, but i dont know about other places. are you getting any leaks from anywhere?
edit : damn that was lot of posts in the time it took me to type mine ha.

AutoZone can't help you, nor can any other parts stores. There is no machine for PRE-OBD-2 Hondas.
GroundZer0 are you talking about a Leak down Test or a Compression Test?

Try and type better, it is hard to understand what the hell you are talking about sometimes. It makes me actually have to read what you type LoL...
When you look at the ECU you will know. If it has a little window with a L.E.D. in it then it for sure is OBD-0. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY doubt that it is a OBD-2. If it don't have the L.E.D. then it is probably a OBD-1 ECU.
There is no code for a blown headgasket, not even on 2010 cars LoL.
The ECUs are labled on the side with a TAG. It will be white if it hasn't been torn off, pull the numbers off it and tell us what it is. If it has a L.E.D. it will have PR3 or PW0 on that tag somewhere. Pull the codes if you can that is the most important part.
