Default Y7/Y8 block timing question

Ok, I know that the Y8 head/block combo has timing at 12* at idle. But what about the Y7 block? Is that the same as a Y8 or the same as a Z6 at 16* at idle. I ask this b/c for my swap I have a Y7 block with a Y8 head, and soon to have a Z6 cam in there. I know about the whole advancing the cam gear 4.5 degrees or so to even it out, but if the Y7 block is stock at 16* timing, can't I leave it in there untouched, and the timing should be right around 16* with the Z6 cam. If any one can follow that, I just need some confirmation.

According to my chilton book for 96-00 civics the y7 and y8 are 12 degrees before top dead center

You would want to treat it as a y8, because thats basically what your making it. So 12 it is.

Even if you are running a y7/y8 obd1?

Ok. So if they are both 12*, I got the timing right on, even running a P28 basemap, which is interesting.

So when I put the Z6 cam in there, I should still run the Y8 timing maps, gr. What a pain in the ***.

I would run a 12* base timing. Try running those p2p maps and start from there. For some reason the base timing in those maps is 21*, but quickly drops down at higher load and rpm's...you could probably just change that 21* to 12* in the idle section.
Do you have an idea of what the cr will be with this combo? If its even higher than a normal y8 i'm sure it will need pretty low timing.

edit: yes you will still need lower timing even with a z6 cam. I was running the z6 zex cam in my y8 head and had to keep the timing very low to avoid pinging...even when i swapped in the stock y8 cam.

Also you could just start out with a p28 map and just take it to the dyno to see how much less timing your motor needs. I've tried both(running stock p28 maps with a 12* base timing, which is like subtracting 4* everywhere, and running the p2p maps with my timing set to 21* base like it is in the maps.)

Since I have vitara pistons, it is kinda low. I am converting all P2P maps into my P28 right now. Using the new rpm and map scalars to do so. Bigwig is the man.

Damn i keep forgetting about those vitaras you have in there. I'm sure you will be able to run plenty more timing than those p2p maps then.

Yea, I figured that too. I just made a run with imported P2p maps, ran like complete ****. So back to my old map, and it runs perfect. So that answers my question. No detonation. I figure I can take 4 degrees out of every value on my table, since it is timed to 12 degrees instead of 16.

yup thats exactly what you can do. I think the detonation problems I was having had something to do with maybe something being wrong with my head. Its strange because other people i've seen were able to run much more timing without detonation on the same boost leve with larger turbos. I had my total timing all the way down at 13* at 10psi. For some reason the car still felt strong as **** though.
