What engines will swap into a 1997 Civic LX and work with an automatic?

Are the y8 and z5 my only reasonable options? I've also seen the ZC engines mentioned but they seem to be about the same power range as the y8 engines.
Would a B18b work with a Civic EX automatic if I kept the engine stock or do these two just not match up? (I've searched this with no success) I'm guessing the shift points for the EX might be different than what the B engine needs plus the added power though only about 20hp might be too much...just guessing please confirm.
Thanks,
Jason
Oh and no going manual is not an option because this is my commuter car and I care nothing about driving a manual to work.
Turbo is out of the question also because of the cost and reliability issues.
I just want something with a little more torque and power to merge into 70-80mph traffic without too much of a struggle.

Swapping another auto engine into the car (besides what it already has) is not worth the added expense/work to make it happen. If you want a auto B18B1 sell the Civic and get an Integra. If you want an H22 sell the civic and get an auto Prelude.
There are mount, and frame, as well as other issues when swapping auto to auto. Wiring is also pretty tricky.

I test drove a 2004 Nissan Sentra 1.8s and I prefered the handling feel of my Civic but power wise the the Sentra didn't feel like an upgrade at all and my 1.6 has 325,000 miles on it

y8 falls right in...with a bit of wiring.
a y7 with a 5 speed cruises in 70-80 mph traffic with ease though as well.

Cruising isn't my problem but merging is sometimes a bit of a pain when the merge lane is shortened by cars lazing around in front of me in the then punching it leaving my little 70-80whp car struggling to hit the speed limit while merging.

I have a y8 auto and it's not going to be a big improvement over your y7 for merging. The D-series matched with an automatic is painfully slow. It's daily driver, fuel economy status.

If you want more power, and want to remain automatic you need to sell the car and get something else.

I have seen MANY claim to have pulled off a total B-series automatic swap in a 6th gen but none has ever offered to show proof, done a write up or have actually been successful.

With this car the manual transmission is really the best "power" option. There's just not much juice left with the automatic. Look at the Integra or Prelude for a more powerful automatic car.

^ I han an Integra automatic. They aren't much better. The only Auto Honda/Acura I had that was fast and automatic was my 03 TL Type S. Those have glass transmissions so it's not really worth it. If you wanna have fun and go fast in a honda manual is the only way to go.

Re: What engines will swap into a 1997 Civic LX and work with an automatic?
A guy here in central florida (talkjdm) had a b16a w/auto lsd swap in his ek hatch that HE did. Not sure if he did a right up. But i know it was his dd for like 2.5 yrs. so yes b auto can be done. Best way would prob be just use a auto teg sub frame and drop in swap/ wire up/ and any auto related crap. Sure is it a pia but if some one wants to be diff/ or have a comfy auto b swap to dd why discourage someone?
