Default my engine sounds like it is straining above 3500 rpms

About for a month or so now my d16y8 on my civic sounds like it is straining once it gets past 3500 rpms or so. The engine itself sounds kind of loud with a "nnnnnnnn" sound especially in 1st and 2nd gear past 3500 rpms. When I shift it feels relieved like a lot of pressure has been taken off. Sometimes it sounds like my engine is going to explode or something.

Sorry if it is a n00b question but I just want to know if something is wrong, like a belt or something. The only mods done is intake and exhaust. I'm pretty sure it isn't the VTEC making the noise but you guys could prove me wrong

sorry but no, that probably would help though. Don't really know how to explain it that well...

Will it still redline? Does there appear to be a drop in power?

It's not clicking and it still redlines and there seems to be no loss in power which is good. Just raced a big truck but loss by a car length but I had a horrible jump anyway and it was up a hill

I'll check the valves and injectors and the cat tomorrow. Good thing it's a holiday

Thanks guys, you all are a big help.
