Smoking Civic?!?!
My civic is an ex with original engine with 141,xxx miles on it. It has lots of snap and I love the availiabilty of aftermarket parts fo my vehicle. There is a slight problem though with the car. Whenever VTEC kicks in or being at high speeds my engine starts smoking. I can see smoke come out the back in a cloud at around 5500-7000 rpm. This really bothers because it smells and doesn't look very cool at all. There are some mustangs and camaros in town that need an ***-whooping and I probably wouldn't get much respect with smoke coming out of my car. It smells as if though it were burning oil. The crazy thing is that it doesn't happen until higher rpm's. I was thinking maybe the rings are bad or something? Any suggestions?

check your rings, one may be out... or they might be on the verge of going out... just a hunch. you can buy a handy-dandy tool from kragen or auto zone to check your compression, its really easy to use

Mine does the same thing, but my compression checked out perfect. It doesn't bother me because I can't see it through my rear window. BTW my motor only has 55000 miles on it.

one other thing i might suggest is that if you have a strait-pipe, or you don't have a cat, or you have a cat that is bored out to act like a strait-pipe like i do, then a little bit of smoke coming out of the exhaust is normal since there is nothing to resignate or filter out the exhaust coming from the motor... but if that is not the case, then i would have a mechanic check it out for you

Mine starts smokin' around the same time. And yes it's oil. Mine started smokin' just after 150,000 miles. Still does now at 205,000 miles. I'd say time for a swap. My opinion.

Re: Smoking Civic?!?! (buster13)
I have a 92 dx w/d15b7 and it does the same thing. I changed my head gasket the other weekend for a non smoking related problem and I was inspecting the head and I grabbed a valve and checked the side to side clearance and the thing wiggled like a bitch. In other words there was alot of side to side movement. Is it possible that the valve guides being worn and the valves seals being worn can contribute to my problem. The cylinders looked clean as hell and i just cant see how the oil control rings are bad. My car has 150k on the ticker. My prelude has 275k on the original motor and it doesnt smoke.

My car still has the stock exhaust on and it leaks like a seive. When I replace the exhaust with something different will it quit smoking up my cabin?
