This is a pretty basic task assuming it's a 5th or 6th gen. Civic.
1) Take your shift **** off. If you have the time, remove your center console too. It will make it a little easier to slide the shifter through from the bottom.
2) Jack the car up
3) Take the exhaust off it's hooks near the resonator and let it hang. (Gives ya a little more room.)
4) Examine how your shift linkage is assembled. Pretty straight forward stuff.
5) Unbolt the bottom of the shifter. Let the linkage hang there.
6) Follow the linkage that is still connected to the shifter towards the tranny.
7) Unbolt the linkage where it connects to the tranny.
8) Now this is where the removed center console comes in handy. CAREFULLY remove the rubber seal from around the floor (inside the car)
9) From the bottom of the car you should be able to just pull the entire shifter out w/ the linkage still connected. It might take a little elbow grease cuz' ya got the exhaust to manuever around but take your time and you'll get it.
10) Once it's off examine the assembly of the shifter. Disassemble it and CAREFULLY remove the rubber seal from the shifter.
11) Generously apply some silicone grease to the pivot ball on your new shifter and inside the rubber housing and just slide it on just the way it was on your old shifter.
12) Put everything back together in the opposite of how ya took it out!!
13) Make sure everything is tight and off ya go!!!

Have fun. Trust me......it's only the beginning!!

That was the first mod I did on my civic. Real straight forward. Only thing you might need aside from the regular tools is some grease to lube up the ball-joint on the new shifter. Good luck.
