Default Replace EG Hatch Rear Window Grommet/Nut

Hey,

So the nut has been stripped out on the back window of my 94 civic hatchback. Does anyone know how to take out that small assembly that fits in the window so that I could replace the nut and or grommet setup?

All you have to do is pop the hatch...use I believe a 12mm open end, and disconnect the window strut...if you look at the part that connects to the window, theres a nut there. ONce you get that out, the outside gromet slides out.

Those things are like 18 bucks each at the dealer (grommets+rubber washers, and threaded piece). pricey but a true necessity.

If it takes more than 5 minutes to complete each side, you might be doing something wrong...very, very simple swap

I just did this (almost) following the instructions above.

PARTS
For each side, you will need to replace the threaded nut: 90101-SR3-000
I also elected to replace the seal: 90105-SR3-000
and the locking spacer: 90106-SR3-000

Left to right: 90101, 90105, 90106

In that picture, one old seal is still on the nut.

If I were doing it again, I would probably not buy the spacer unless the nuts were really messed up (one of mine was as you can see here).

TOOLS
The hex on the spacer is pretty big. I'd guess about 24mm. I used an adjustable wrench to hold it.
The nuts on my lift supports were different on each side. I needed a 12mm and a 13mm wrench for them.
I also needed a screwdriver to pry the spacers off the nuts.

PROCEDURE
  • Lift the lift gate (hatch) up so that you are facing the concave side of the glass that used to face inside the car
  • Hold the spacer with the adjustable wrench or 24mm wrench.
  • Undo the lift support bolt from the nut and move out of the way being careful to not drop the washer off the end of it.
  • Use the screwdriver to carefully pry the spacer off the nut (this moves the spacer away from the concave side of the window that was previously inside the car) while holding the nut on the outside (top) of the hatch window.
  • Remove the nut from the window
  • Place the new (or old) seal on the new nut.
  • Test fit the spacer onto the nut to see how they are keyed and aligned.
  • Place the nut/seal in place on the outside (convex side) of the hatch window.
  • Carefully slide the spacer onto the nut and hold it in place with a finger on the outside of the nut and a thumb on the spacer.
  • Hold the window open to maximum with the hand that's gripping the nut and spacer to take pressure off the lift support.
  • With the other hand, move the lift support screw into place (make sure the washer is still on it) and screw it in to the nut by hand as much as possible. Be careful to NOT crossthread thead the lift support bolt. You should be able to turn it in quite far by hand.
  • Continue to support the hatch glass with your shoulder (or a helper) so as to not put weight on the lift support or nut that you're working on.
  • Use the wrenches to tighten up the lift support bolt and spacer. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN
  • Repeat these steps for the other side.
VISUAL AID
You can see the keyways better in this picture. The keyed inside of the spacer (left) matches up with the keyed outside of the nut (right).

Guys, follow the above procedure to the letter because those little nuts are made of a very soft aluminum and VERY VERY VERY VERY easy to cross-thread. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. It helps to have a second person handy to hold up that window, I've found.

Great first post, ala.frosty.

I have a 2000 CRV where one of the two supports (shocks) has come off and the nut is stripped. The parts look very similar if not the same to above. I went to the dealership and they had the locking spacer but said the nut was part of the window. Did Honda change this? Can I use these parts will they work?

I went to a different dealership....the guy at the first dealership was not looking at the rear windshield diagram correctly. The dealership does have these same parts for a 2000 CRV
