Default OH **** 9300.....

ignore the sig I have a 99si now. I was having a dull day going home and ran through the gears onto the freeway. As I'm about to shift in 4th I accidently put in 2nd. It went by so quick its hard to describe. I saw the tach run to about 92-9300 as right away pushed in the clutch and disengaged from 2 to neutral. How will I know if I have messed anything up. I drove home real slow and listened for any unusual noises or smells but it was all normal. I'm still terrified I jacked something up. Also when I'm in gear I can wiggle the shufter left and right like 2 inches each way I think this had something to do with the wrong gear engagement. How can this be fixed? Gear brushings? Thanks for any replies I think I might have been real lucky but we'll find out.

everyone hits the rev limiter every once in awhile, it wont have any longterm damage, unless you do it repeatedly on a daily basis

dude I'm in a stock 99si....b16a2. The rev limiter is somewhere around 8400....I was above it.

if u over rev your car like u did u will hit your rev limit which is there to protect the engine from damage so like what was said before as long as u don't repeatedly bounce your motor off of the rev limiter u will be fine.

Don't worry about it too much right now. If something had gotten screwed up, you would definately know it by now. Just be REALLY careful that it doesn't happen again, and you should be fine.

WHY oh why? Do people continue to talk about things that they have no idea of which they are talking about. The rev limiter does not stop a mechanical over-rev. It does however keep you from over-reving the motor using the gas pedal,period.

96greengsr, if you haven't noticed a loss in power then you probably didn't bend any valves or cause any damage. If you hurt something doing that, you would notice almost instantly. As for the looseness in the shifter, check to make sure everything is tight and that the bushings are still in place.

Exactly, the rev limiter will ONLY stop YOU from pushing the pedal to the floor for too long... so to speak. If your going 100 and drop it to first(if you can even force it into gear) you will do damage, even if you limiter stops at 500. The engine itself is still spinning at 10.000.

donkey knows what hes talking about...the rev limiter will not protect you from a mechanical over rev....
96gsr....if youre not hearing any unusual loud valve tapping or clicking..you should be okay...best bet is to run a cylinder compression test to make sure compression is even across all 4...ive accidently over revved before on a missed shift and checked my vafc and it said that i went to 9899....and there was no damage...sometimes you just get LUCKY...but for god sakes man...be careful...

Bahaahaha hit the rev limiter...that is funny....well thank god someone on here has the knowledge to know that in a case like this the revlimiter doesn't exist or work like it does when you are flooring it up to redline.

Well I hear you dude, I know what it's like to over-rev due to a mis-shift! About 2 or 3 times, I swung my B17A1 to over 9500rpm, and this is on a motor with WAY over 100k miles! A true measure of just how well Honda enginerred these motors to stand up to such abuse!

Yup, Example....friend of mine drives a Eclipse GS....gets rearended at 3 in the morning and the guy takes off....he starts to follow, redlines in first (7000rpm) redlines in second (7000rpm) and then instead of third goes to 1st (12000???rpm) basically the clutch went to butter and car no longer wanted to go anywhere. The engine took no damage.

So, check your clutch by driving it hard again and see if you get any slipage. But, let someone back me up on that before you try it but, that is the only way I can think of on how to check the clutch.

best way to check a slipping clutch is drive like u normally would...and then when youre in 5th....floor it down all the way...and if it starts to slip...yer clutch is on its way out...

on another note...what does the clutch have to do with over revving...you gotta worry bout bending valves or swallowing them...a clutch dosent have to do with over revving..your friend's clutch prolly got hot as hell when he was banging gears and thats why he got slippage...

well I took it to the store and on some errands everything seems on working condition. There is no ticking or unusual noises or smells and the car behaves like it always has. Even took it into VTEC for a bit and everything was ok. So I'm hoping I got away with this one. I'm still planning on getting a compression test done soon. I'll try to not be such a dubmass anymore.

The reason a clutch would go to buttere after a missed shift is tha t the clutch is the only mechanical link between the wheels\ transmission and the engine.. Being made of friction material and not a permanently bonded connection the friction material took the abuse and not the motor..
Your wheels spun and turned the gears inthe tranny, When you engaged the clutch you seperated the motor and tranny input shaft when you reeased the clutchin the wrong gear you made the motor spin too high. you probably didnt do too much damage but you lost life on your clutch as for the looser shifter that doesnt make a whole lotta senseunless you did some serious internal damage to that tranny. if you have excessive chatter at high rpm its probably your clutch if you have chatter throughout the rpm range you may have f*cked your tranny

hehehe a safety-blanket... There's a guy in the prelude forum who WISHES it was... He was redlining in 3rd, then missed the shift to 4th and hit 2nd. Needless to say, he more than pegged the tach. Screwed his whole vale-train over and warped a good deal of his drivetrain (piston rods, wrist pins, crankshaft, etc...)

Damn expensive...

Over rev, the engine trys to slow down but can't cause the wheels are spinning so the clutch burns up......DUH
