i think i lost my 2nd gear
well i was at the track the other day and when i shifted into 2nd i heard a nasty grind. now when i try and put it into 2nd its like i can feel the gears spinning throught the ****. just to be safe i shift from 1-3( will that put extra wear on my tranny)?

first off, that sucks. And define "extra wear." This is a term thats abused and feared. Heres how you cause excess wear. Shifting so fast that you hear a grinding. That will do it. But. If you wanna play it safe skipping 1 to 3, just make sure you 'rev match' and shift smoothly. Like if you rev 2st to say 5000 rpm, throw the clutch in, move the stick over to 3, not necessarily too fast, wait for the rpms to match with the speed, and dont shove the stick in too fast. My onlygrinding is redlining 1st gear , throwin the clutch in, and pullin to 2nd so fast the synchro dont got time to catch up. In other words, this will not cause excess wear. When you figure out totally how a manual transmission works, your reaslize theres no problem to skip gears. I generally dont use 4th. I go from 3 to 5. 4th is on a straightaway when i go up a incline and 5th had no power.
I say skip 2nd until you find the problem.

ya i know all about the rev matching and all that but if i do rev meatch when i skip second it wont cause anything to wear out faster will it?

It shouldn't. I had a friend who lost 2nd gear due to synchros and shifted from 1st to 3rd for 4 months until his tranny got fixed. Hasnt had any more problems with it.

would i be better off just getting a new tranny or fix it cuz 2nds th only problem with it?

i have a dx tranny but my engine is an ex. i dont know whats wrong w. it, prob syncros cuz i had this prob b4 then i put in synchromesh and it went away fro like a month.

yea possible that its your synchros..or your shifting fork..but since you a the DX tranny with the lon gear ratios you should just say screw it and not bother fixing it and get a EX tranny a lot better ratios.

ya it does, i hate this tranny. anyone in the bay area wanna help me put it in if i get one, cuz the shop charged me as much as it costs for the tranny n i dont got that money. ill pay you if u help me

Tranny's are interchangeable...
Like someone said
DX P20A00000
EX P20B00000
S40 is 96-00
S20 is 92-96
S40/S20 mark is right there on the front of the tranny near the slave cylinder... you can't miss it... it is a small white plate saying S20 or S40... if you have trouble finding it, just find engine number D16Y8/D16Y7 (under the distribtor) and look on the left from there...
And those P20A000/P20B000 codes can be found near the filler plug...
Find the filler plug (where you put tranny fluid)... it is very near the place where the right axle/CV joint goes into the tranny...
There you will see a little circle which is divided into 2 sections which have numbers in them...
Upper section should read P2A or P20
lower section should read A000 or B0000
You can't miss...

seriously, to pau someone to take your tranny apart and replace the synchros, if you could get a whole y8 tranny in good condition for the same price (and ill bet you could, like 300$ for the tranny maybe.) Then do it.

ya i just drove it to get gas n it is horrible not having 2nd gear. the gears are already long enough and then i have to skip a gear. i wanna drive it off a cliff

it could be. because before it started to grind i would shift fine but i would feel like something was loose. only from 1-2

yea it' s your syncro's same thing happened to me in second after it got grinded. i had a dx tranny and because i'm planning on doing the mini me i just bought a z6 tranny
