did you check what the CEL is throwing?

if your alternator has been squeeling or making noises you should fix it.

take your car to AutoZone and they will be able to hook up a diagnosis scanner up to it and tell you what code it threw.

right where your ecu is, which is on the passenger side panel right by the door on the floor board. you should have 2 harnesses one will have 3 or 4 inlets on it and one will have 2 if you take some wire or somthing that can ground, put both ends of wire or something into both inlets on the harness, then turn your key to the run possition and your check engine light will start flashing. it will flash slow a couple of times then fast a couple times. make sure to count the slow ones then fast ones and thats the code number.
here is the site to go to for codes let me know if you have any troubles

This is just for starters....

Weak or dead battery -

dying or dead alternator

check the fuse for your charging circuit under the hood

Check for potassium chloride buildup on your battery terminals.

would a weak or dying battery or alternator cause the check engine light to come on?

Possibly. Why not drive your car to Autozone? They can check your codes for you as well as test your battery and charging system.

If you have a multimeter (voltmeter) you can check your battery and charging system yourself. Turn the **** to Volts DC (V with a straight line, then a broken line about that) and put the red lead on the positive battery terminal, and the black lead on the negative battery terminal with the car turned off. It should read somewhere around 12V. Now turn the car on. It should go up to somewhere around 14V because your alternator will come on.

The ECU codes thread at the top of the forum will show you how to check codes.
