Default Bad engine?

So my engine is burning oil. I hear that I am gonna need my "rings replaced" or something like that. If that is indeed $1000+ like the shop said it was, I am thinking of just buying a low mileage engine for under $1000. I currently have a 1.5L SOHC 16valve engine. Would I notive any difference if it was a 1.6L VTEC SOHC? Also, should I save up a couple thousand more and get the DOHC version? Thoughts and suggestions please.

I would look in the classifieds and find a used SOHC longblock.

Thanks for everything so far. Is there an online list that shows what will fit in my car? I have a 94 Civic DX Coupe, with the 1.5L 16 valve SOHC, as mentioned. I would hate to buy a motor and find out it doesn't fit in my car

http://www.actionsalvage.com/e...a.asp pretty cheap used engines. but if you get a 1.6 you need a tranny ecu axles motor mout conversion kit so its probably better if you dont wanna spend a lot on it to just buy a 1.5 motor
