My boyfriend noticed that my car was making a grinding noise when I would shift and I listened and couldn't hear anything. So today when I was in the parking deck at work everything is magnified and I didn't have my music blaring and I noticed a high pitch squealing and grinding noise coming out of 1st into second. Actually through all the gears but would only do it when I stepped on the gas. Its not loud but also idling it makes a crackling noise? Any suggestions on what this could be? I have a 97 Civic HX with 50,000 miles on the engine. Also it doesn't happen when the clutch is disengaged and I have a manual.

It only happens when the gas is pressed? Or can you hear it without the clutch in and the tranny in neutral?

Basically only when the gas is pressed does the noise get worse, really a sorta of whining grinding noise, but I hear a crackling noise when the car is idling.

Whirring? Kinda rough?

If so, try to just put the car at idle with no gas and listen for a light whirring......if you hear it it is your tranny bearings.

EDIT: Clutch out and tranny in neutral.

If you don't we need to consult others......if you do, it is the bearings in your tranny.....time to pull out the warranty.

Depends if you plan on having a "friend" do it or paying.

Rebuilding my tranny was bearings, and two shifter forks. $1163.00

It isn't something fun.....take the car to a tranny shop and ask them what they think. Estimates should be free, if they aren't go somewhere else.
If it needs to be rebuilt, look in the local ads for coupons......I recieved 100 off.

Well it doesn't whir when it sits in neutral, but its still make the whining grinding noise when you step on the gas. So on this other site, they seemed to think it was the tranny there too. Any more ideas?

No I have a K&N filter. My engine is stock and its an HX turd. lol

If you do some research, and find out that it is in fact the tranny that's bad, you should try calling around to some local peformance shops that do motor swaps. Usually those places have single cam tranny's laying around, and could probably sell you one for cheap, and probably install it for cheap as well. I don't know about going to a tranny repair shop, and paying for labor and parts, when you could probably find a complete tranny that works fine for much less. Good luck though, hope you get it fixed soon

i'd do what rodrez sed, so many single cam hydro trannys laying around...in fact i have 1 in my garage collecting dust...too bad you're far away...i'd sell it cheaaaaaaaap

Some other people think its the throwout bearing, not really the tranny at all. It definitely doesn't sound like a belt.

if you need a tranny do what evreyone said above... to find hydro trannys go to SRO(www.streetracing.org) get on the message board.....import classifieds..... tons of d series parts that no one whats but you need....good luck on find the problem
