Laws on Engine Swaps?
I'm looking into doing an engine swap, preferably the b16. anyways i've been talking with some of my friendsthat have said i would need to get an engine of my year (2000 civic) or newer or it wouldnt be a legal swap. I have never heard of anything like this and was wondering if its true and is there anything else that i need to look out for. Also when it comes to building ur own engine, using parts from different engines and years what if any laws apply to that? thanks - eric

The law solely depends on the state you live in I believe.
I have a 92-95 swap in a 99 and since there are no emissions, no testing of any kind where I live, why would it be illegal? Marketing this car later would narrow the range of people to basically states with no emissions.

I'm in PA. Here in PA you can stuff any motor you want in your car, as long as it has the cat that your car came with.
Or atleast that's what the local inspection station told me.

Down here in South Texas doesn't matter waht you have. No inspections, no smog, no nothing. You can have a different motor and the dumb asses wouldn't even notice.

Not completely true....
I believe*** that if a 95 and down car has a 96+ motor in it, it needs to be obd2. Not 100% sure though. Pa is changing their emissions testing. Anything before 96 has to actually run on rollers and 96+ has to sit their and idle for the test.

Yup, in places that are strict w/ their emissions (I'm mostly referring to California) you need to swap an engine of equal or younger age. I guess they reason, the older it is the more pollution it creates.
