OP, if you posted a pic of the setup it might help clear up what you have on the car, which in turn could help with better suggestions.

the bad place in the wire is so close to the top of the sensor, it would be real difficult to fix it. of course without moving the sensor, it'd just rub thru again. that's another reason i wanted the angled mount down the road, so to speak.

i'm almost positive it's just a test pipe (thanks ek 4evuh for the google image search). i bought the car from a strugglin college kid and i may be off the mark, but he'd have put a $20 test pipe on it before he put a hi-flow cat on it. that would explain the bad cat code too. that's just my simple-minded powers of deduction at work tho. :D

If it is indeed a test pipe that could explain the CEL. Good luck figuring it out.

Any word on the code? If you haven't yet I'd recommend having your local parts store guy check it. It's free and easier than jumping the connector and hoping you count correctly.

I also prefer using a scan tool on OBDII cars compared with the paperclip trick because it gives you a more detailed explanation. IMO, OBDII cars should only use the paperclip trick if you're in a bind.
