Default Killing the cel on an 00 EX

so i don't have the funds for a new secondary o2 sensor and an angled o2 mount so i was wondering why not just put the cel on a toggle? the bad o2 sensor (code 63) doesn't effect the cars engine and i can flip the toggle on to check for any other issues down the road. there's even a switch already installed by the previous owner in the dash that doesn't go to anything. bad idea?

Uh, yes. 1. Definetly bad if you're in an emissions county. 2. You're tampering with instruments that are important with your car. 3. Also, you're messing with some electronics that could damage something down the road. 4. Finally, the o2 sensor does affect your engine. Fuel consumption and emissions are whigging out in your engine right now.

not tryin to be a smartass but are you tryin to tell me i can get better than 41 mpg on this car? i make 1400 mile trips every month an consistently get 37 to 41 mpg hiway with the current cel. i know a primary o2 sensor deals with fuel mixture and such but the second only measures emissions compared to the first o2 sensor readings to make sure the catalytic converter is doing its job correct? i idle right around the 750-800 rpm and cruise 80 mph @ 3500 rpm. does that sound off? thanks for the input.

Ah, the primary would do what I stated. The secondary does crap. But if you live in emissions county, they can still pull the cel regardless of the light being on or not.

yeah, that's what i tho't. i live in backwater alabama. this rednecks don't even know what emissions are. :D

yeah, i tho't of that too but was worried somethin serious may pop up in the future. that was the reason for the toggle but i see that it's wired thru the board. i popped it out and am gonna keep an eye on the gas mileage, etc. funny how a little orange light can get on your every last nerve...

do you happen to have a link for such an item. the cheapest denso i found was $57 then add another $30 for the angled o2 simutlator. may not be much for you but $90, especially at this time of year, is more than i can afford. divorces do that to you...

What's the point in turning the power off that light bulb in the dash? You just don't like to see it?

If the light bothers u pull the bulb...its not going to affect your ability to pull codes if you go to an autozone or something and have them pull the codes. Also curious about the o2 simulator...are you running a test pipe?

I still don't understand why the OP was saying he could replace the sensor (aka. fix the problem) and then he'd still put in a simulator.

It's the principle of trying 5 difficult $20 ways to fix a simple $80 problem.

the car has a some type of aftermarket cat or maybe a test pipe so it throws the 67 code. the wires are rubbin the undercarriage so i'd need to buy a new one in addition to an angled mount to fix the 67. since i can't afford that, i chose to pull the bulb. sorry for the confusion.

sorry for being vague but a new sensor isn't going to fix it coz there's an aftermarket cat on it. being poor sucks but thanks for the lazy vote!

it cant be a test pipe or high flow cat...those are two completely different pieces. it's one or the other.

it taint stock, that's for certain. it looks almost brand new on a 10 year old exhaust. what is the difference? always assumed they were the same thing, just a pipe with no catalyst, hence the 67 code.

I have a high flow cat on my car and I don't have a CEL. My brothers' DC2 had one too and he never had a CEL in the 2 years he owned it.

Most name brand High flow cats are DOT approved.

Edit: Don't even make a subliminal suggestion at sympathy. I have NONE for people who are poor and make stupid decisions. If you consider yourself poor there are a whole list of things you shouldn't do.

1) Modify your car.
2) Smoke
3) Drink
4) Have expensive TV or Cell phone subscriptions.
5) Car payment
6) Buy a house
7) Video Games


Pretty simple. If you think you're poor, you're going to continue to be poor as long as you spend money like you're rich.

lets see, i have to have a car to drive to work. my house is paid for. wtf makes you think i spend money like i'm rich anyhoo? i eat bologna sammiches for lunch and ramen noodles for supper. all the mods to this car were done by the previous owner. try getting a divorce and see how fair the court treats you just becoz you have a set of ***** (if you don't, i apologize). i guess i shouldn't say i'm poor, i'm just broke, but whatever. i'm not gonna lose any sleep tonite over this ****. thanks for the advice on test pipes, cats and life.

Do you know whether the OBD2 code is P0137, P0138, or P0139? There's a possibility that the O2 sensor is fine but there is a wire problem.

nah, i'm not overly concerned about it since it's just the secondary o2. if it was something that was affecting how the motor ran, gas mileage, etc. i'd be a little more proactive about fixing it. i wouldn't doubt it's the wiring tho. when i removed it to take a look at it, the undercarriage had rubbed some of the insulation off the green wire on the sensor.

If the problem were indeed the Grn wire, then repairing it might be easier than installing a CEL toggle switch. Just a thought.
