JDM B16
Just so you know I have already searched and have come up with some good information but none of which will answer or help me solve my problem. I just swapped a JDM B16 in my EG hatch. I noticed that it had a steady stream of oil leaking on the front left side of the head gasket when I started her up and also noticed that when I am at high RPM(above 5,000) I see a cloud of smoke in my rear view mirror. Im guessing the smoke was burning oil because it left a black stain on my bumper. So I did a compression test and the compression was as follows: 210/210/205/210. This is on a .042" milled head. My question is where do you think it is getting the oil from to burn: piston rings, valve seals, or head gasket? Also how are my compression numbers? I dont think its the rings because my compression is pretty much the same all around. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks and sorry its so long, I just wanted to give you all the details. Also the head gasket is new. Thanks!

i have the same leaking oil..not a big deal to me so i dont worry about it right now...most likely its the piston rings. i have the same smoke, but its not dark or anything. it just smells wierd when i hit vtec.
carbon on your rear bumper is normal. both my buddies with jdm b18c's have it on the whole rear hatch of theirs so its not a problem. i wouldnt worry about it if i were you.
your numbers seem a little low also. my us b16 is milled and i tested 243 across. (piston rings once again.)

Take a look at the cam seal. It's the black rubber seal that is on the left side of the exhaust cam right in front of the distributor. Over time, it hardens and starts leaking oil.

Check the gaskets around the head. Is it the valve cover gasket? The smoke from your exhaust @ high RPM could just be your motor running rich, since you're running untuned. Edit: when you mean smoke, are you talking a little or batmobile-style-smoke-screen ****.

Its not a lot of smoke but its noticeable in my rear view mirror. I am also running my friends GSR mugen chipped ECU. Could that be causing me to run rich. Thanks for the replies guys!

Mugen chip flashes run very rich. Check this thread for easy directions and pictures of a leaking cam seal/plug.

If it's gushing, then it might be serious.</TD></TR></TABLE>
its not gushing its just a steady stream of oil which looks like to me is coming from the head gasket, but I will take a closer look at it tomorrow. Thanks for the replies guys.

I switched to a my stock P28 ECU to see if it was smoking because of me running rich and it still puffed out smoked in the vtec range(its not a **** load of smoke but its enough to notice in my rear view mirror). Im guessing its the valve seals and not the rings considering the consistant compression I got(210/210/205/210), but only a leak down test will tell. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks again for all the input.
