HELP on removing stock spring from strut.

HELP on removing stock spring from strut.
Is it neccesary to use a spring compressor when removing the stock spring from the stock strut? The compressor i rented wont fit between the coils on the front springs of an EG civic. anyone have any suggestions?

i once saw a guy in a mag put the shock and spring setup in between two tires one at each end to absorbe the setup when loosening the bolts, it said "now stand back unloosen the bolt and pray

No it is not neccesary, the same thing happend to me the spring compressor not fitting in the coils. It is pretty dangerous to not use one though. I just stood on the spring in the grass and just kept unscrewing the bolt and then bam! Mine only shot off a couple of feet not bad at all. Just be carefull!!!!

Yes, you need to use it. What I did was use a pry bar to slide the peice into the middle of the spring. Then just slid it around the coil until it was in the right position.

thats something i wouldnt do but you can just go to a pep boys or autozone and buy on there not that expensive

That's the one I'm talking about. I used one from there, and it didn't fit. I tried the one for sale at sears, and it was about the same size. I just spread the coils apart a bit to get the wide 'lip' through, and slid it into place.

when i take out the stock spirngs on my struts, I use iron wire, you can compress the springs using the iron wire..
