Default Help! D-series valve adjustment (Dist. Rotor?)

When adjusting the valves on a D15B7, upon starting you need to get the #1 cylinder at TDC (easy) and then the Distributor rotor pointing at the #1 plugwire. How the heck can you tell that? Am I missing something here, because I can't find anything on the dist. that points toward the #1 plug wire.

Help!

pull the cap off..........look for the white tip on the rotor.......when motot at TDC it will be pointing at #1 or #4 wire terminal on the cap.

I thought that the D16 motors had the marks on the camgear that you line up with the deck of the block to tell you that the motor is at TDC?

That's what I did. I took a guess on the dist. rotor thing and I assume I got it right.

If I didn't and I adjusted #1 when it was pointing at #4, what would happen?

you'd have adjusted the valves on the intake stroke when they should be on exhaust, causeing overlap, and possible damage.

Well, it sounds pretty smooth and revs out nicely, so I assume all is good, right? Can't say that I notice any power difference though and one or two seemed to be out of spec by a lot before I did them.

sounds good then.

BTW proper procedure was to find TDC on the mark on the crank pully, then remove the cap, and make sure the rotor is pointing @ #1

I did that method, but the Helms manual and the Haynes manual were both very vague about the Distributor rotor being lined up. Neither one gave pics, hints, etc...they just said to do it.

Now I know. Thanks for the help guys.
