Feel gouged by my machine shop on valve job.....
Guys, I feel severly molested from my first valve job on a 1.5 head. Honda noob here, pulled the head off my 95 because of a plug fouling and running rough. Could see some dampness on top of the piston and thought maybe a head gasket failure. Found an exhaust valve with a nice size chunk missing. Carried to my shop where they have done my v8 motors in the past ...and with good results. Told them to check for cracks, if good , valve job and clean up. Bill was 236 bucks for one head......I was shocked. Charges were 50 buck for pressure test, 50 bucks for surface grinding, 85 for valve job, 12 buck for valve and three bucks each valve for seals. I normally pay a third of that for a pair of v8 heads......is this in line for four cylinder heads or did I get overcharged.......thanks..J

what you need to do is go back there and be nice and tell them they over charged you. If they dont play ball tell them you are going to **** them with the long dick of the law. Threaten a lawsuit and report there dirty bung holes to the BBB. After you give them aids and take there money and give them a bad rap you will feel much better. *****.

i agree, that total is outrageous. you can have a fresh, remanufactured head shipped to your front door for that!
however, i wouldn't be suprised to find that a shop that specializes in domestic V8s has higher pricing for imports than a shop that does a lot of import work. not double the price... but i think you get the point.
don't take it quietly, at the very least have them explain why the price is so high. then let them know where your business won't be going next time...

I ask if they did rework the import stuff and Pat said yes. Told what I thought needed to be done and he said no problem. Since I had never felt overcharged before , I did not ask for a price quote. My mistake. Thanks for passing on what you paid for similar work, I will use that when getting them to explain the reason for so high costs. They will for sure know I will not be back.

they told you the price, you agreed to pay, end of story....
a business can charge whatever they like for a service. if you agree to the charge, you pay... sorry buddy
but 85 to regrind 16 valve seats isnt terrible....

Its still pretty bad. I had my head cleaned, polished and the valves checked and adjusted accordingly for $90.

i took 2 heads to a machine shop.
i took them apart myself
told them to inspect both, find me 16 straight valves and the best head.
regrind the valves and seats and i would put it together myself
total cost, 35 bucks.
would have cost me 150 if i had them put it together for me

Re: Feel gouged by my machine shop on valve job.....
I did some checking around before I called the shop back. In my town we have 4 main machine shops. I called the other two biggies for a quote on what I had done to my head. Both of them quoted, pressure test, 45, surface grind, 45, valve job, 175 and 185. I stated this was NOT a double overhead cam head..........that was still the price for a valve job. We do not have anybody here that specializes in imports. You guys that got yours done for around a hundred bucks did good. What part of the country yall from.......

Re: Feel gouged by my machine shop on valve job.....
i still dont think you overpaid for the services you had done....
he didnt check... he reground 16 valve seats... that takes a good amount of time for just 85 bucks.... it goes something like this
remove all valves
setup on machine
grind 16 seats 3 times each
check each seat by marking the valve and checking for proper seat
regrind any that arent seated properly
reassemble head
$85 dollars
sounds pretty good to me no?
but i think he inflated prices because he found a problem with your head and justified you paying extra for his troubleshooting...
