Default valve lapping

my carsin the shop theyve got the head pulled and they want to know if i want them to do a valve lapping job for an extra $80 CDN. it involveds using some paste and a suction tool to hold the valve in place while they gently use a rubbing compound on the valve so it ensures a better seal in the combustion chamber

is this worth it??? i dont really wanna pay 80......the car never burned any oil at all...it has 180,000KM though

Why are they wanting to do it? Did they pull the head because they actually did something with the valves in the first place?

if the head is appart, i usually do it. all the lexus engines i have done, 5 of them, 2 got a valve job and the other 3 got lapped. i use valve grinding compound from permatex, and a drill with a tire valve stem in the chuck. it is a judgement call, if it were me i would atleast do that if not a full valve job at that mileage.

actually the purpose in lapping valves is to get a visual referance as to where the valve face is contacting the valve seat not to make a better seal

I vote it makes the valves seal better.
