EX tranny swapped But Grinds! Tech Help pls?
I have 96 DX
My DX ISB was shot, so I got an EX tranny put in. It was from a 99, but cant tell if its good or not. anyway, I drive it and when I go from 2nd - 3rd, it grinds. 3rd to 4th and back is ok. if I go 5th to 4th it grinds sometimes too. So it looks like it has problems going into the 3 and 4 from 1,2, and 5. I was told its because I have a short shifter too. I think its the syncros for 3 and 4. I can shift into 3rd with no grind if I let the RPMs fall to idle then shift. At lower RPMs I can also pull out with no clutch. Whats the problem? I don't want to fix my DX and go back, I like the EX now, but of course I will if I have to. How bad are the gears now that Ive grind several times since I put it in?
thanks for the help everyone

are you racing when you do this shifting and get grinding or normal driving?
you might not have the linkage set up right so it might be binding. if you didn't get the input shaft centered right that will also cause a lot of binding.

Re: EX tranny swapped But Grinds! Tech Help pls? (stackz)
I dunno what oil they used, but I highly doubt the make of the tranny fluid would cause this. all the fluids were changed, this happens on normal driving. Sometimes when I get it in 3rd and release clutch pedal, it grinds and pops out. For some reason I want the problem to be something other than what the shop told me; that it was because of my short shifter. I really like my short shifter and don't want to get rid of it, unless I get the fastline shifter. If its the syncros, GM syncro mesh will fix the problem? is it that easy?

A short shifter doesn't cause gears to grind.
Must be the synchros, if the synchromesh fluid doesn't help, you'll need new synchros in the tranny.
I wouldn't trust buying used tranny's anymore. I bought one, and the guy said it only had a slight 2 to 3 grind. Split the cases and so many parts were fried! SO I bought a professionally built tranny instead with a two year warranty!

Sounds like your have a problem on your hands. If there was a slight problem in every gear the Oil might help, but the different gears seems like the synchros. To fix those you have to open the tranny and replace. Sorry. I hate to say it.

Re: (snatch13)
there has been some threads on the gm synchromesh oil if you look. i had a slight 1-2 grind and used the gm stuff (for $11.99 a quart) and all is well in tranny land right now. no grinds whatsoever and feels like a hot knife cutting through butter. i always say to try the cheapest option first, in this case replacing fluid with this stuff is worth a try.
