distributor question
I have a z6 head running a d16y7 distributor. I got the timing done but was told i couldnt time it perfectly because i need the stock z6 dizzy. I want to know if theres any other i can use. I know my obd2 harness wont clip right in but my mechs will take care of that. The car has almost no power until around 4000 rpms but it does smell a lil like excessive fuel. I read the books and everything leads to timing. Lemme know what distributor i can use and whether vtec makes a difference or not. Daily driven car needs to run. would really appreciate advice.

Re: distributor question
How far was the timing off when the dizzy was fully advanced/retarded? If its not too far off then you might be able to slightly lengthen the grooves on the dizzy so you can turn it a little more when adjusting ignition timing.
Maybe try a D16Y8 dizzy, might work better for the Z6 since they are both VTEC.

Re: distributor question
yeah i think the bolt pattern is only good for 1 bolt to mount. obd1 vtec is what im lookn for now. Wanted to make sure if vtec dizzys were different.

Re: distributor question
You the bolt pattern is only good for one bolt to mount? Is the problem that one of the other legs hits some where preventing full adjustment? If that is the case you can chop that leg off with a grinder. I've done this to use an LS dizzy on VTEC B-series motors.

Re: distributor question
idk cuz ive never used a non vtec dizzy on a vtec motor but I dont see why the timing would be off unless it wasnt installed properly or your timing belt isnt on right. If your OBD-1 How did the OBD2 dizzy plug in?

Re: distributor question
Keep your harness and distributor as they are, make a conversion harness to connect it. Eventually find the right distributor and then you can just remove the adapter and have a harness that's uncut and distributor that mounts correctly.

Re: distributor question
Yeah you could do this, it would simplify things in the future if you had to use an OBD2 dizzy and switch back to an OBD1. Either remove or install the jumper harness. But at the same time it isn't difficult to cut and solder a new clip on to meet your needs.

Re: distributor question
true that. I think i have a Y8 Dizzy on a Z6 head. I'm really not sure becuase the Dizzy came with the head and when I bought the head I didn't even know wtf I was buying other than that it had VTEC. Because it had a Y8 IM/TB and a Y8 Valve Cover on it.
