You can make a little scratch on top of the distributor upper bolt hole in the middle and continue the scratch across the metal of the head that the dizzy bolts to. Make the same scratch in the same place on the new one and then line it up with the scratch on the head. The same can be done with a pencil or a piece of tape. This will make sure the distributor position is close to where it was. You should indeed set the timing afterward. If you have to, buy a timing gun and then return it when you are done. Make sure the wires are connected to the right terminals.
