Default dist never points at number 1, WHY?

why is it when the engine on a honda is at TDC, and you install the distributor, it never points directly at number 1? in other words, it is not possible to static time a honda engine.

for instance, if you drop the dist into a small block chevy, when in correctly you can turn the dist so that the rotor is pointing directly at the number one plug wire, so the timing would be at 0 degrees if you had a timing lite on it.

on a honda, it is as close to number 3 as it is to number 1, and since you can only put the dist in 2 positions, not possible to get it any closer. I have noticed this on many hondas I have worked on.

Are you sure the mechanical timing is correct?

What engine?

1993 civic 1.6 vtec. absolutely sure cam timing is correct.

you are just used to it, but look at your car's rotor with the cap off and see if you can turn dist so it points directly at number 1. I bet you cant do it.
