I tried the search, found nothing but other people talking about there conflicts with tie rods. Need help on how to take off my old outer tie rod off of my 97 honda civic dx and replacing the new? anyone? thanks

they have to pressed off with a machine at a shop...unless you have that machine it is almost impossible w/o ruining the piston. same with putting them on...need to be pressed.

slow down sleeper. I think you are talking about piston wrist pins. the title says tie rod end like for steering.

loosen the jamb nut against the outter tie rod and then loosen the tie rod while holding the inner tie rod shaft. once its back together you will need an alignment ASAP. no questions

thankyou 93 EG Sir... your on the same track as i am. Sleeper took me into cyber space. But yeah, anyways back to the topic. I tried loosing the nut for the outer tie rod, but it seems like it keeps spinning and not going anywhere? Is there another way i have to take it out? like do i have to put weight on the outer tie rod to take that nut out?

the nut that you loosen on the back of the tie rod is just a jam nut. Remove the cotter pin from the castle nut remove the nut. You will need to pound the tie rod out of the steering knuckle. If you are replacing it just beat the f out of it until it pops out. Now you can spin the outer tie rod off the inner tie rod. Replacement is the rev of removal make sure to us a new cotter pin and get it aligned asap

edit: reread your post on secone glance it sounds like you are having problems with the castle nut just spinning. You can try tightening the bolt back up to reseat the tie rod or with a long pry bar between the frame and control arm pry down to keep it from spinning.

no you should'nt have to, i was able to unloosen that nut with my front end up on jack stands. sounds like it might be stripped. if it is, cut the thread part above the nut with a dremel tool. then you would have to pop it off with a ball joint fork ( something of that name). it should be placed under the rubber boot, and hammered until it pops up. work with it cause sometimes it is a bitch, your replacing it anyways so if the boot breaks no worries... just clean up the oil. after your able to get the tie rod loose, use two end wrenches( forgot the size) to unloosen the outer tie rod from the inner. then unscrew it.... hope this helps!

damnnn. thanks guys for the help.. i had no idea there was a cotter pin. But thanks.. ohh yeah, once i pop the old outer tie rods out. Do i just twist it off the inner tie rod? and than replace the new one reverse way?

taking off the outer tie rod, break it loose were it connects to the inner tie rod, with open end wrenches.then untwist.replace the same way. mark it were the old one was sitting. when replacing tighten to the mark.

thanks 4drsi. thats exactly what i did. I used 2 vise grips and than twisted it counter clockwise and clockwise and got that outer rod out.. thankss everyone!
