Re: d16y7 more power
depends some are shyty drivers and run the same times in a turbo d as they do in turbo Ls's lol. or a built D( vitara and eagle build) can make 300+ and prob cost as much as a motor swap. if u do it urself. D's a easy to build and maintain. just the transmissions suck for D series. that y7 tranny sucks as it is.

Re: d16y7 more power
oh yeah there are definitely variables there, reliability, cost, potential...... a boosted D IMO has a very good balance of those. but there are other options........and there are advantages and disadvantages to each.

Re: d16y7 more power
na d-series is only worth it in certain chassis - the advantage is decent torque and overall light weight. the reason it makes good torque is because the d has a long stroke.
if you just want some pep, get an ex/si trans, p29 pistons, a nice header (SMSP), some sort of Bisi cam (ie http://bisimoto.net/store/index.php?...products_id=36) and a GOOD tune via obd1 conversion.
or, you could plop a z6 head on there (ports flow better than y8 head), run a wild street cam...and the rest of the stuff i mentioned. all of that will get you power in the range of a stock GSR swap.
a turbo setup would be very powerful per dollar spent, but it would be expensive. doing a swap the right way, with a quality engine and proper preventive maintenance done before running the engine, etc is expensive too, and you end up with an engine that does have a high ceiling, but will require yet MORE money to make powerful. anyway, re: the turbo d, you'd have to fortify the engine with head studs, something like this - http://fjdistributors.com/product_in...roducts_id=566 and then this - http://www.go-autoworks-store.com/gotutusy1.html

Re: d16y7 more power
a stock D series bottom end in good shape can handle 200hp just fine......and 200hp in a 2000-2200lb car can be ALOT of fun. and a D series wont need a whole lot of boost to get to 200hp.

Re: d16y7 more power
hey the y7 came with a compression of 9.3.1 is low compression, just build it, that block with that heads are the best one for it, dont put v-tec head for turbo it is not stronger that your head, so just put the intake of a y8 and rebuild it and go boost, or if you put a S40 transmition and some cams on it with headers you are going to beat a lot of v-tec, that engine is stronger for turbo dont made it v-tec you are going to run bettler

Re: d16y7 more power
You wont get much from a y7 without boost, so your better off getting that b20 or something.
And if you do, try to get a sir tranny or soemthing with shorter gears.

Re: d16y7 more power
if all you are looking for is a bit more power out of it, then I/H/E, IM, cam, and tune will definitely do that. itll have some more power....not a whole lot, but noticable, and still be a good DD. add a Z6 head for some more top end.
but if you want significantly more power......you gotta boost it.

Re: d16y7 more power
Hey i am in the same situation i got the Y7. I have a Dc sports 4-2-1 header,Obx hi flow cat,Full catback exhaust, ebay intake,Lowered and it makes decent DD power.I wouldnt waste my money on my y7 i got an ls going in it in a few weeks.Just because i want a little more power lol. by the way mine is a 98 cx hatch with no power steering,ac,locks, windows to power luxuries.

Re: d16y7 more power
Mini-me Y8 head swap then save for a turbo setup. Your stock internal D is safe and reliable in the 220-240whp range with a good setup and tune. Dollar for dollar, this is the most power you're going to get. A swap will cost you as much and net about 80whp less...

Re: d16y7 more power
Y8 manifold, port for ls throttle body, 10lb flywheel, underdrive pully, ex tranny, tri-y header, and a big delta cam, possibly port the head. That mite make it more fun but in all honesty...depending what you wanna do with the car....boost is your answer and building a small set up isnt that bad. your rods are your weakest link on your motor- set of H-beams and you have solved most of the problem..shim the oil pump to!!.
