Ya, start at the header, there is a cover there, then the cat, and work your way down. It should only take a couple of min. Heat shields always rust out, rattle, and eventually fall off.
The alternative method is to get a friend to start your car for you and you look and listen for the rattle sound to try to isolate it's location.

Re: clank clank (old man neri)
it only does it when i'm starting from a complete stop though?
are we talking about the same issue?
just trying to make sure it's not suspension related. i can live with rattles and what not as long as they aren't doing harm to the car itself

Heat shields will rattle at the weirdest moments. It's the first thing I would check out. I am not ruling out that it could be suspension or something else for that matter just that the heat sheilds are the easiest thing to diagnose.

Where abouts on the car is it coming from? Do you have a set of hubcaps on your rims? I had a problem not too long ago, I have a 1993 Civic LX, which originally had the little center hubcaps. Anyways, it also now has full size 13" hubcaps on, and on a couple of the wheels, the little original 'H' hubcaps were left on. Anyways, one came loose and was rattling in between the rim and larger hubcap. Scared me when I first heard the noise, but as it turned out it was nothing, and it would only happen when starting off from a stop. Hope this makes since and might be something to look at.
