Civic Swap - D16 to B16

Civic Swap - D16 to B16
So i got a JDM b16a1, from a 99 si. and i have a 99 ex. got the engine to fit with some pounding with a hammer on the driver side engine bay on the other side of the fender. Haha our cherry picker ran out of oil serveral times too. It was hectic. We did this all in a one stall garage too. But, we got the d16y8 out and the b16 is dropped it. we have it all bolted up and hooked up..... But we ran into some trouble. a friend thought the OBD2 looked the same as the OBD1 wiring harness. but the fuel pump connector has 3 more wires in it. and what he did was cut the obd2 wire in half and cut the obd1 at the same spot on the other motor. so now its half and half a harness. so yeah. have to re-do some of that. But. here is the question. Got skunk2 exhaust. i spent enough money. so im not buying a test pipe yet. But there is the OBD2 sensor plugged into the cattie on the exhaust. If we get the harness all OBD1 instead of half OBD2 and 1 could we disconnect that OBD2 senor from the Cattie? I would think so cause the ecu will be OBD1 as well. Any ideas? Thanks guys.

No. If your motor AND car are both OBD2 then just stay that way. If you want to go OBD1 just get a jumper harness with an OBD1 ECU. If you try an OBD1 harness you will need to convert the Dizzy and a few sensors.

K. We also ran into another problem. Sense my friend cut the OBD2 wiring harness in half, right outside the the hole in the engine bay. And we wired the OBD1 harness to that to replace the other half of the OBD2, The fuel pum doesnt turn on when the car is on. It wont even turn over cause the fuel pump isnt on. Doesnt even click when we turn the key.
So what im getting to is, if i get a OBD1 harness jumper. Can i just plug that in and re sawder the old OBD2 harness back together and use my obd1 ecu? So Than i would be using the OBD1 ecu with the OBD2 wiring Harness with a OBD1 Jumper?

I would scrap that harness all together. Just get a new engine harness.
If you are set on running obd1 then just get an OBD2B - OBD1 jumper harness.
No need to cut wires that way. It will all be plug n play.

Yes. 99-00 Civics are OBD2B 96-98 are obd2A
Go get a new OBD2B harness and if you want to run an OBD1 ECU just pick up a jumper harness.

Oh ok cool thanks R6. One more question.
Would I be able to just sawder my OBD2B harness back together? So than i dont have to spend the money to buy a new one. And just buy a jumper harness?
And also. I looked some Jumper Harnesses up. Can a Jumper Harness also be called a conversion Harness?

Yeah if you want to, you can solder it back, but be sure you do it right. I am imagining what your friend did, and that will be one giant mess. But if you are confident in yours or your friends skill then go for it. But if it doesn't work out properly just replace the harness. That will be the easiest route. I know not the cheapest but for peace of mind it might be worth it.
And yes, conversion harness/jumper harness, its the same thing. Just make sure you get the right one.

Haha yeah,
I was at work and he wanted to work on the car. I come back and half was laying on the ground...
I love electrical, sodering is easy, and the wires are going to be the same color of course. Ill just have to go pick up some heat shrink.
I just dont want to replace the harness when i still have the other half. The 99 civic dash is a pain to take apart. And a week before i just took it apart to install a cd player and an xm radio.

----- Just to double check. dont want to waste money. Or get anything confused. I want t hit v-tec in the b16.... instead of it sitting in my garage. haha. So that harness will work?

Yep. That'll work.
BTW, you don't need to pull the dash to remove the harness. Its a one piece harness that drops down through the firewall right into the passenger kick panel. You can pull the whole thing out through the engine bay.

Oh ok,
didnt know that. I knew it was by the kick panel but i didnt know you didnt have to take apart that dash.
Where is this dizzy and sensor located at? Cause i got a full jdm b16a1. from JDMcorp. Came with everything put together already. The direction said just unbolt and unhook the old d16y8 stuff and pull it out and dent the side and drop the b16 in and hook up the b16 stuff. Would that dizzy and sensors be on there already?

Re: Civic Swap - D16 to B16
If its a complete swap then all that should be there.
Ignore what I said about all that before as I thought you were trying to use an obd1 harness to run it. If you use the harness you have or buy a new one you won't need to do anything else to it. As long as you have it all mounted up and the only thing holding you back is the wiring.

Re: Civic Swap - D16 to B16
you can get another harness if u got the money but if not the get the haynes manuals for both engines and look at the wire scimatics in the back of both of them to make sure the wires are all hooking up to the right wires and also so u dont short a wire out and have to replace the whole wire which is a pain. i would put the obd2 plug back on the harness and find a way to convert the rest of everything else to obd2 or obd2b. staying more up to date on technolodgy also gives u the advantages to so much more. if your going to race the go obd1 if your gonna have a car thats fast and drive around town then stay with what the car and engine originally are

Everyone
please don’t listen to this guy, It’s way better to run the jumper harness to use an obd1 computer…. All the tuning chips require odb1 computer… Hondata, hts, chrome, so staying up to date with tech is not the good move here
