Default Checking motor condition? (out of car)

Is there anyway to tell if a motor is bad with it being out of the car? Besides taking it completly apart.

that can mean a lot of things though, if you know what you're looking for then yes, otherwise just take it apart and check everything. like finding a broken rod, hole in a piston, or bend valves, major things like that are easy to spot. it just really depends, did something happen to it?

well, you can check for all the major things like i mentioned, and check all the sensors with a voltmeter. the thing i'd be worried about is compression, which you can't check with the motor out of the car, but you can check the ring clearences with a feeler gauge
