Car suddenly shuts off while driving on freeway
I have a 00 si...
I was driving on the freeway then all of sudden, the engine shuts off. After a couple cranks, it wont start, then a couple cranks later, it will turn back on. This happened several times in the past already. There is no CEL. Anyone know whats the problem?
i have no clue...
Thanks

this happened to me too. its your ignition switch. there was a recall a few years ago. take it to the dealer and they'll fix it for free =]

Re: Car suddenly shuts off while driving on freeway (d0nald_ducki3)
strange....when i was in Colorado in 2001 my 00 civic LX would cut off on me ...dealer couldnt find the prob it would never do it then. It would start right up after it shut off but coming to a stop the rpms would die.....left CO after my dad got sick and it never cut off again....i thought it may have been an altitude prob but thought the ECM would have read the atmospheric parameters and corrected for it. Still have the car and it hasnt cut off since.

Its probably is the ignition switch(lock cylinder), i had the same prob on my 99 accord, next time it cuts off and u try to start it, crank it and hold it on that run position, it should stay running. If you let off and it dies, than its the ignition switch.

I am having the same problem. I have a '99 Honda Accord. The dash lights flash, rpm's go up some, car shuts off, loses power, then most of the time it will start right back up on it's own. I took it to the Honda dealership, they replaced the EGR valve and V-tech switch. Still happening. Check engine light came on one time, but next time the car shut off it turned it off. The dealership told me unless they could read fault code, they couldn't help me. I had the ignition switch and catalytic converter replaced when recall came out. Any ideas? I've almost been in a few accidents already.

Re: Car suddenly shuts off while driving on freeway
Had this problem in my 89 CRX Si. Left me stranded on the freeway exit ramp. Had it towed to a local Honda mechanic and told them the problem......they both immediately said "It's the ignitor". Next day they replaced it (#7 in image below) and the car has been fine ever since. That was probably 10 years ago.
These are very expensive at the dealer (06300-P2E-305 $218 at OEMAcuraParts.com), but you might be able to get one at Autozone, RockAuto, or Amazon for cheap (probably called "ignition control module"). Just do your research so you know you are getting the right one for your B16.

Re: Car suddenly shuts off while driving on freeway
A lot of good leads in here for you.
In my case, I had the same symptoms and it was the ignition switch. Depending on how the switch rested after I turned it on determined if it kept running or not. I jury rigged it with tape to hold it a bit forward keeping the contacts until it got so bad I had to replace it. In my case the lock cylinder was fine, it was everything behind it. For a couple years, the whole thing sat on top of my steering wheel because I couldn't get the security bolts out of the old one.
If this does end up your problem, I had a buddy suggest an awesome idea that worked. Find a bolt with the threaded part slightly smaller than the blank head of the security bolt. Put JBWELD on the end of the bolt and glue it to the blank head of the security bolt. Let it thoroughly dry and carefully wrench the bolt out. My bolts aren't torqued in very hard.

I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but ebay is your friend here. I picked up a Cardone rebuilt OEM distributor for like $30 from someplace liquidating their inventory. I keep it around for an emergency swap or parts.

Ebay is great. It sucks up lots of my money. The trick is making sure you are getting a genuine part (whatever brand it is). Sometimes that is very difficult. I'm still not 100% sure about my "Denso brand" map sensor. But it looks legit, is working fine, and cost very little. Ebay also has the buyers back if you do receive a counterfeit part.
BTW: One bonus thing I found about Amazon purchased directly from Amazon or Amazon warehouse.....their returns can simply be dropped off at a local Amazon-Locker (once arranged on their website). No return shipping cost debates.....no problem.
Also, any Autozone online "ship to home" purchases can be returned at any local store. If you get free shipping, it means no loss of $$.

Re: Car suddenly shuts off while driving on freeway
All good to know. Advance auto is that way too, and I always use the $40 off $100 coupon when shopping there.
That's a big reason why I have so much crap laying around in my garage, lol. Goes something like this... I need a couple cans of brake cleaner. $8. Hmmm better grab, some Mobile1 oil and a filter, and the headlight restore kit.. $63.. past the point of no return now. Then buy $50 of "free stuff" that doesn't get used. Lol
