Default Ignition switch issues on 00' Civic Si

I bought this car used for $2200. It has 181,000km and it's pretty mint except for a few spots, and the ignition. It's a 2000 Honda Civic Si (Or the Ex for the Americans) with I think the D16Y8? Not 100% sure. It's my first car.

The lady I bought it off said that the previous tumbler had warped and that she got it replaced hence why she had two keys. The car starts perfect every time, with ONE exception. The key has to be in a certain spot for it to turn over. You can't just crank it and turn it, or you can't push the key in and turn it because as soon as you get to II the key gets blocked by something until you slowly pull it out and you can try cranking it.

It's really annoying and I'd like to get it fixed whether its going to Pick&Pull and getting one out of a similar Civic as long as it has its key, or ordering the part online. But what I don't know is that if it's the whole ignition assembly, or if I just need to replace the ignition cylinder.

It's hard to explain on text, and I could possibly take a video to try to further explain it, but if I could, I'd like to get the information ASAP so I can get either order the whole assembly, or get something from Pick&Pull. I've tried to Google it but haven't found much success so hopefully someone on here can help me out.

Thanks!

Sounds like the steering lock assembly needs to be replaced, and the electrical switch may be bad too.

Aw man. Do you know if I grab one off a vehicle at Pick&Pull (if they have the keys for it) if I can just plug it and go?

Sure -- but you need to drill it out - see diagram.

Do you know if it would be possibly to fix it on its own without buying new parts? I got quoted at $50 for the Ignition Cylinder, and then $209 with the Switch but no housing/assembly.

The electrical switch is the cheap part, and the lock cylinder is the more expensive part.

You could try spraying some lock lubricant into the keyhole of the lock cylinder, but there's no guarantee of success and the lubricant may not be so good for the electrical switch part.

So I popped open the steering column and found this.

Makes me think the car was stolen or an attempt was made to steal it.

Try Rock Auto.

For my 96 DX, they sell a) lock cylinder only, b) iggy switch only and c)
lock cyl + iggy switch.

If your lock cylinder is good, then you can get away w/ replacing
the iggy switch alone. IT may be a question of simply unplugging
the old switch and plugging in the new one after removing the
two (?) retaining screws.

In my 96 DX, if you are keeping the lock cylinder, 3 wires (I think) associated w/ the lock cylinder need to be de-pinned from the old switch and then re-pinned in the new one.

There is a vid at youtube that shows how to remove the iggy switch
while keeping the lock cylinder.

Look at the OP's picture. The mount for the lock cylinder is broken. At the very least, it must be replaced. I think a junkyard may be the best option for that part.

This compatible w/ a 96:

More Information for STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS US286

What I referred to in my original description re as to what was
available (lock cylinder, iggy switch, combi) did not
distinguish the simple lock cylinder vs lock cylinder + mount
that was part of the combination including the iggy switch, eg,
lock cylinder + iggy switch.

From the Majestic Honda site:

35100-S01-A11 002 001 LOCK ASSY., STEERING 139.22 97.45

The diagram indicates it includes the lock cylinder, mount, iggy switch
and several other smaller pieces. This for a 96 DX.

Post the link. I must have missed the mount in the picture.

It's so annoying. Today, I took some zip-ties and got it held up where the broken pieces match, and put it all back together. Then I tried to start it up, and I couldn't get it. Checked my battery connectors and they were a bit grimy, but no corrosion.

My sister came home, and got it start second try. Could it be my alternator? Starter solenoid? Maybe just the ignition lock cylinder?

Okay, ignore the fact that somebody has clearly attempted to steal or has stolen the car and, in so doing, has broken the ignition switch mount.

Yeah, breakthrough idea. Start checking the alternator and starter. You are definitely on the right track now. Let us know how it turns out.

Ended up getting a new ignition lock assembly. Starts perfect every time. Just time to save up some money for a locksmith to change all the locks on the car so it works with one key.

You mean re-key the locks? Better have him re-key it to use the new key that came with the new ignition lock assembly and break that old key completely.

Order Parts

This is the generic link. I do not see how to get to the link address
for the specific system, eg, combination switch in this case.
The above address is shown for all specific systems.

The part described as "2" boxes all parts associated w/ the
cylinder lock and assembly + iggy switch and related small parts:
-lock cylinder and mounting assembly
-iggy switch
-column holder
-break head bolts (2)
-recessed screws
-harness clips (2)

I guess I should have said screen capture. But no matter, the OP seems to have found the solution.
