nothing you just wont have new tags. dont trip on it as long as you pay your registration your good. allthough a smog guy told me there changing the stuff in the begining of the year for anything obd1 or older he says its gona be harder to smog older cars.

Pay your registration fee's and tell them to put your car on hold (or whatever they call it). That way your not paying extreme charges. When you come back smog the car and your set.

That article says "any new" smog laws. That makes me think the current ones are still in place. Like someone else said, pay your registration and smog the car when you get back.

noooooo dont do that nonop is stupid you gota pay to put it on the nonop then you gota pay to take it off the nonop and it HAS to be smogged once you take the nonop off so then you gota pay smog. its just a waste of money. if you pay your reg. and dont smog it atleast you can get a temp tag that will last for a month and they usually will keep giving them to you for several months.

Call the DMV and ask them for advise for your particular situation! The advise given above was good, however you will be out of pocket for registration fees on your vehicle vs paying the $10-$17 PNO (Planned Non-Operational) http://www.dmv.ca.gov/online/vrir/faqpno.htm . Most deployments to Iraq are at least 18 months.

Like patdow1 said "Most deployments to Iraq are at least 18 months" either fix it now/register or pay the nonop for I don't know let's say $30. Then worry about it when you come back. Give DMV a call. Good Luck

I had a non-op on my coupe for over a year while I fixed it. I didnt pay to take it on non-op,what your paying is the remainder of your registration. My car still wasnt ready for smog so I got a temp tag for another 3 months after I got the non-op taken off and paid the registration. Either way the guy has to get his car smogged,so what I would do is get the non-op then when you come back home, work on finishing up or cleaning up your swap then get it smogged.
