Default bouncing or inactive speedometer

All, greetings.

I’m new to Honda but not to wrenching. I have been using Honda-tech as a resource for the last couple of months. I recently (Nov. 2007) acquired a 93 Civic with a bad transmission for the kids. Oldest son and I replaced the transmission over Christmas break. I now need to work on some of the other issues.

Bouncing or inactive speedometer is top priority. I have read a lot about the VSS and instrument cluster. So far, I don’t think it is a VSS issue (no CEL and cruise works fine).

Instrument cluster was removed and screws on the back tightened. That didn’t help. I am about to take the cluster apart to look for broken solder joints and/or the “chip board” that was mentioned in another post.

I would like to have more info on either of these issues. Any (reasonable) help would be appreciated. I’ve tried to do my research so I don’t appear as a novice asking simpleton questions.

Thanks.

Default Re: bouncing or inactive speedometer (KidCar)

I had this same problem in my 96 civic. Sometimes it would bounce up and start working for a short period of time and other times it wound just bounce around and then quit. I replaced the cluster myself and it fixed the problem, though you probably could fix it yourself if you wanted too, itd be easier to just get a new one.

I had same problem when I first bought my car. I took it to Tacoma speedometer http://www.tacomaspeedometer.com/ and had it rebuilt, it was $130 and they had it done in like 2 hours. I think you just need to open it up and relube the needle, but I could be wrong, but whatever they did its worked fine ever since.
