Another speedometer problem. Replaced cluster and vss
Just as the title says, speedo doesn't work. Worked 23 miles of the 350 on the last tank of gas.
Car is a 2000 dx
Speedometer indicates 19 mph as soon as I turn the key to the "on" position.
Wobbles from about 14-26 at anything below 19(wobbles faster the faster I go).
Anything over 19 it indicates 19 with no wobble.
Brand new vss, unused as we'll.
Put in a second cluster from a 2000 ex, same thing.
This to me sounds like a wiring problem, like the cluster is getting signal but not a ground?
I've seen the CSB on the harness hitting the rear intake manifold bracket but don't see anything rubbed through but I put some electrical tape there to make sure-no change.
I know the connectors tend to corrode but mine looks fine. It I also cleaned with contact cleaner to be sure. Again no change.
If anyone has any ideas on how to test the harness I'm all ears.
Oh and the car is a manual so the Ecu won't make the car act funny.
Thanks in adance.

Re: Another speedometer problem. Replaced cluster and vss
My girlfriend's Kia has the same deal. Sometimes when I wiggle the pigtail for the speed sensor it works again, today when i tried while I flushed her trans it didnt tho. I'm pretty sure I need a new connector for hers, the original speed sensor left a contact in it and I had to pick it out and well I fucked it up a lil. I'm gonna open the harness a little and run new wires to the new connector when i find one.
maybe you should check there, if you can shake the wires leading to the Speedo sensor and that creates a difference then that would be where the problem is.

Manual, with a working tach .
I've tried wiggling the connector. It does seem loose but I've had friends sit inside while I clamp alligator clips to the pins. Even unplugged the speedo say 19. Leading me to a harness short.
Thanks

Re: Another speedometer problem. Replaced cluster and vss
i thought my vss was bad... hooked a scan gauge 2 up and it gets signal.... when the dash does work its within 5mph so I know my is wiring at dash or the dash itself

Alright I'll do that. Any idea what color the wires change from/to between vss plug and dash? I'll try to find an obd scanner that reads mph

Alright no luck yet with the scanner but, if Ecu wasn't getting a signal wouldn't it throw a cel?
would It also be safe to think since there is no cel that the problem is in the dash somewhere? I know the lights are never 100% accurate but could be a good start right?
