All 96-00 Civic HB owners with custom exhaust piping...
I need help on what I should do for a custom exhaust. My situation is, I have a completely stock d16y7 engine in right now and am 100% sure that I am swapping and not building up the engine and am thinking about a GSR swap or LS Vtec. The only thing is that I am in college right now on my last year so I'm not swapping till I graduate cause the money will be more stable. I have decided that I want to go ahead and at least complete the suspension and exhaust system right now and I'll do all the swap stuff later. My question is, what custom exhaust setup should I get installed right now. This exhaust setup must bolt up to the current d16y7 header and the future GSR header. Is that even possible? If so, what should I get? Keep in mind that I have the header with the cat on it right now with the sohc engine but when I swap, that won't be there so this exhaust setup must include a cat too, meaning till I graduate, I'll be running two cats. Is that stupid?
If you could help please do, but another way to help is to post your current exhaust setup if you have a 96-00 hatch with a custom exhaust.
With your setup, please post:
Pipe size
Mandrel or Crush bent
Resonator and size if any
Cat and size if any
Muffler used
How does it sound?
Is the piping all one pipe or sectioned off, (Meaning you custom made a B pipe, and axle back)
I really need specifics cause I want to do it right the first time cause I know with the custom pipe I did on my old 94 civic coupe, I ended up paying about $120 in pipe adjustments after I did other stuff to the car like lower it and add an aftermarket header and I don't want to go through that again

I got a 96HB and I did a crush bend with 2 and 1/4 piping
Everything works great and the piping was clean acceept for recently when I bought my SRR rear suspension and i have to reposition my exhasut. I think there is only 2 bend that they need to do so Madrel I think is unnecessary

Re: (Greasemonkey)
Correct me if I am wrong, but your engine has the cat attached directly to the exhaust manifold correct? No real "header" in the picture. If taht is the case, then you will have to modify the piping after the swap.
Also, I would only recommend mandrel bends. A smaller diameter mandrel bend will usually flow better than a larger crush bend.

Dont bother with the exhaust till the swap is in. That way you only have to goto the muffler shop once.

Good point. It just kinda sucks when you see other cars rolling around with exhaust systems that sound sooooooooooooooo good and I'm still riding in silent mode, which definately still has its plus points.

if i am right and your car is in the exhaust manifold i would just suggest buying a header and puting it in. it not only give you a header but it cuts your car and you will get gains and keep plenty of back presure

Your right, I have the header with the cat on it. So your saying, do the catback with a aftermarket cat now and just buy a d16z6 or y8 oem header for now?

What I did was get a universal muffler (tsudo) and just cut my stock muffler off. Welded the new muffler on and was rollin like that for a while. I then got the swap and it was nessisary to get the piping because the cat is now under the car. I got 2.25 inch crush bent piping from the stock (LS) cat to the tsudo muffler. Only cost about $60 and doesn't sound too bad either.

I'm pretty sure what ever exhaust you have, it wont bolt up to the swapped engine. I think it falls short. Stick what with you got IMO till the swap

Just wait till you get the swap, it'll be tons easier that way.
For now, you could just get an intake if you don't have one already. That way you have a little bit of sound, plus it isn't all the time and you won't get hassled until you have a reason to get hassled.

well if u really wanted an exhaust u could just get a rear section now and do the midpipe after the swap to make sure everything fits nice.

Good idea. I have a s2000 muffler on the way that I'm going to retrofit on my oem axleback, so I'll just modify the axleback for now and do the b-piping and cat after the swap

mandrel keeps the pipe the same diameter thru the bend. with a crush bend, the diameter gets smaller at the bend (like bending a straw with ur hands)
just buy an aftermarket catback. it doesnt cost that much more than a custom mandrel bent exhaust, and you're guaranteed a decent sound. i had 2.25" crush bent and a n1 can. that **** was soooo damn annnoying and loud. i found a brospeed catback for $225 new. it had slightly smaller piping, and a resonator. i gained ALOT of low end torque with the more restrictive setup

Good point. But I thought aftermarket catbacks for my car were set up for a oem header with the cat on it, meaning I would have to modify the catback to make a under car cat fit on in after I get a regular header.
