It is a system. It all works together. You need to consider your power goals in the long run, size your exhaust piping accordingly, and buy all your components so they work together.

the stock cat will be the big choker, get a random tech hi flow, theyre also 50 state legal and flow about 6786087 timesbetter than the stocker

exhaust definitely helps out. especially if you opt for the whole "package" muffler, larger piping, straight pipe, ect. and power increase also depends on what muffler you get too. but i definitely recommend an aftermarket exhaust setup.

so muffler is important ? i figure the itr muffler would be good since itrs have 195hp and i wont have anywere close to that so flow shouldt be a problem with that + it looks stock and is low in noise lvl compared to afermarket. let me get your input on that

The problem with the ITR and similar A'PEXi World Sport exhaust is that they are NOT straight-through exhausts... they have a pipe into the muffler, some baffles, and a different pipe out of the muffler. A straight through like the Comptech will give better gains, and with a Quiet Tip Insert, the Comptech is a power adder with straight-through design and Stock Power Levels.

i know what u mean about not assigning hp #'s i was just trying to see if the package would hit up more overal than just piece by piece. so the itr muffler is a no no ? str8 through design is the way to go... but i hate the look of those canister type things

ITR exhaust isn't a no-no... It is a better exhaust than LS/GSR have... and it is only $200 used so if you're on a budget go for that. I, however, decided the Comptech unit was worth the money. On here (honda-tech), Dr.Rab01GSR is selling his Comptech 4-2-1 header in perfect condition and I am sure you can find a used Comptech catback if you want it.
The Comptech uses an oval muffler, not a round coffee can.

the muffler is definitely important, air flow definitely differs from muffler to muffler. currently my exhaust set up on my 98 gs-r is... 2.25 piping, no cat, and an axel back A'pexi N1 muffler with mandrel bent piping. i noticed a nice increase in top end power and a definite change in sound, which contrary to some opinions, i love. the N1 owns!!! hehe. an itR set up would for sure be an improvement though if that.s the route you're going to take.

The full ITR exhaust, from the cat back and maybe including the ITR cat, hovers around $200 used online. Think that's expensive...
The Comptech catback exhaust is now around $650 new. http://www.diabloautosports.com/ for a new one. Used, they run around $400 in good condition. The Comptech header is $369 new, for the MIG version. A catalytic converter will run about $160 or so.

You could do the ITR catback... new its probably gonna be real pricey and not worth it. Or you could buy Mike's Comptech axleback (usually what, 350 new?) to your local muffler shop and have them install it on your car with custom 2.25" mandrel bent piping. Whatever you wanna do.
