Default 98 Civic Si (CDN) or EX - SOHC VTEC embossed valve cover?

Hi there,

I'm looking at buying a 1998 Civic Si (I know it's an EX coupe in the US). Car is in great shape.

When I popped the hood I was expecting to see SOHC VTEC embossed valve cover, but it looked like just a regular SOHC cover. There were no VTEC markings on it whatsoever.

Where does one find the engine code markings? I'm a total Honda newb so any help is appreciated!

Wondering if this is normal or if perhaps the car has had the engine swapped.

Thanks in advance.

Just look for the VTEC solenoid.

Vtec solenoid is located on the upper left corner of the head. It has a cylinder, if you google it I'm sure you can find pics to help.

Also under the upper radiator hose, there's a flat section on the engine block that will have the engine code.

D16Y8 = VTEC
D16Y7 = non-VTEC

The 96-98 d16y8 never came with a vtec valve cover, I also was confused but the solinoid was there to prove it

'96 - '00 Civics with a D16Y8 don't say vtec on the valve cover. '97 - '00 Acura ELs do say 1.6L Vtec on the valve cover though.

If you want to get a VTEC valve cover for your D16Y8 - get a 1992-95 EX/Si D16Z6 one from a junkyard (new ones are discontinued from Honda). I did this and also painted it with VHT wrinkle red for the JDM look. I am buying the chrome oil cap from ICB motorsports for $21.97.
