Default y8 swap wont start HELP!

i have a 98 civic dx that i bought with a spun bearing stock motor d16y7 in it. i pulled that for a d16y8 i bought. *the y7 still started up and ran when it was pulled 3 weeks ago* i put the y7 distributor and crank sensor on the y8 then swapped it in and plugged everything in made sure all the grounds were sanded to bare metal and tight. (trans ground, valve cover ground, and thermostat housing). i bought a p2p ecu for it and wired for vtec, pulled the 3rd wire out for the iacv thats not needed with the 2 wire iacv on the y8. finally today i go to start it and it just cranks and cranks. its getting fuel(fuel pump primes and can smell gas when i keep trying to start it) getting power to the distributor but not getting any spark. the distributor is off the y7 that was running fine when pulled so i feel like it cant be that. the only thing i dont have is a knock sensor yet but i heard it should run without just will run in limp mode. any input on what could be causing this would be appreciated... i need to get this car running asap

First thing I would do is thoroughly check all the distributor wiring. Even though the distributor is off the y7 that was running 3 weeks ago, are you sure nothing happened to it?

usually limp mode is forwhen the cars running and somthing goes wrong not for when ur trying to start it. its just to keep it running. id hook up the knock sensor im not to sure if the p2p comes in both 0bd2a and b but you should look into that

ino, i was saying that a knock sensor shouldnt cause a no start. i no the p2p is obd2a because of the plugs on it compared to obd2b

Y7 and y8 distributors are identical

i put a known working dirstributor off a y8 on today and the first time i cranked it it made a weird noise and blew some smoke out of the intake manifold. then after that same thing as always just cranks and cranks no spark plenty of fuel

Have you pulled the plugs to verify no spark? Have you let the cylinders dry out? The engine might be flooded.

Do the following tests.

Verify the color of the wires for your distributor plugs

i decided to check the timing because it looked like a fresh timing belt on the motor. sure enough it was 5 teeth off tdc, took the belt off and set it to tdc and it fired right up
