You could run 2.5in on a SOHC turbo and on a DOHC turbo running low boost. Built motors need the 3in. That is all.

and what about a vacuume in the exhaust? If you dont have enough exhaust comming out of that 3" pipe, youll end up losing some power by having like a back draft effect created by the vacuume... right?

NO...
Too big is not good... you lose velocity...
That will lose both hp and torque...
If you can FEEL the backpressure (the easiest way to tell is how "on" the gas you have to be to maintain acceleration... the less the better... until it starts to run poorly at light acceleration (even then it could be benificial at WOT... but not at lower rpms or throttle.)) on your current set-up it probobly needs bigger piping... other than that it's overkill.. and could cause loss instead of gain.
If you ask me even 185 is a little low for 3"... I know LOTS of people with well over that per side (v8) that wouldn't even consider putting 3" exhaust on...
If you're getting crush bent pipe some may say that 3" crush is like 2.5 mandrel... but that's not really the case either because crush bent pipe will always have more turbulence regardless of diameter...
what kind of turbo do you run?
what psi?
when does it spool?
what is your current exhaust set up... IE full... manifold/cat/catback.
You'd probobly be better off with an upgraded downpipe (if available) and a hiflo/no cat... the catback exhaust isn't going to create much if any backperssure till that thing is really pooring out the fumes.

if u dont have a 3 inch collector at your header its gonna sound like **** going small to big. Ive seen it happen alot on my friends cars. You gotta run some serious boost too.

If you have the right turbo setup, 3 inch is fine. But if you have a tiny t3 that doesn't make any power after 6500rpm, that exhaust is hurting you at this point. Remember though, as you continue to build your motor, the boost can be turned up, turbos can be swapped and you will already have the exhaust. So even if you aren't able to use that exhaust to it's utmost potential, it sure as hell beats the stock exhaust and it beats paying for a 2.5 and then a 3 inch exhaust.
In short: If you have it - keep it. If you don't have it and need an exhaust - get in now and save your self the trouble of buying 2 exhausts.
