1st gear troubles... :(
I have recently bought a 94 del sol SIR it has a b16a1 motor and i think a y1 transmission, i just have one problem with this fantastic car. when i push the stick shift into first its sometimes hard to push it in i do not hear gear grinding. This also happens in reverse and in 2nd, not as bad in 2nd. This only happens if i have been in the higher gears if i was only in 1st and 2nd gear it slips in like butter. I have talked to a mechanic and he said its the sycros i later did some reserch and discovered, if i am correct, 1st and 2nd gear do not have sycros. Ive been told its my clutch going out but im under the impression it would do it in all gear. I DONT KNOW!! help me please

honda = **** transmission
with the del sol, its a old school style clutch, works differently and sometimes gets stupid like that. try clutching, drop into first, if there is resistance, keeping pushing it to first while slightly releasing the clutch, it might just drop in after a little give on the clutch
reverse sometimes gets stupid too, might even grind, the syncros are ****, i have to **** from 1st to reverse to resync ****, or i have to clutch for a good 2 seconds...

It sounds to me like your clutch is getting worn out. When you're stopped is it hard to get into first gear? Synchros are also a possiblity, and yes 1st and 2nd gear have synchronizers. All forward gears have sychros, otherwise you would be grinding gears everytime you shift.

How hard are you trying? Like a super hard have to use your feet to get leverage, or squeeze your abs leverage or slighty more than normal? Sometimes, if it doesn't go in, press the clutch and put it into other gears first, then back to 1.

either worn clutch or worn shift fork. my brother has the same problem with the CX trans he has in his 2000 civic.
also try bleeding the clutch cylinder it may have some air in it
i know the older honda trannies had problems with the shift forks cause of being aluminum, i've seen lots of my friends cars bust these shift forks off from hard fast shifting and blow a hole in the tranny case.
not saying your's is busted or anything, but it could possibly be worn. honda eventually used steel shift forks in there trannies which is what mine has in it. i have almost 103,000 miles on the stock tranny and has had the crap beat out of it and it still shifts decent besides the syncros are trash, but if you catch the right rpm and rev up a little when downshifting it goes right into gear.
it's just like driving a big truck which have no syncros in the trannies

The exact same thing is happening to my b16a when stopped i have to use a bit of force to put it in first, but when i'm moving it shifts into first easily. Every once and a while it's hard to get in second (only happens like once a week). I would like to know exactly what's going on too.

Don't bother changing the clutch unless of course it's time. I recently changed my clutch thinking it was the reason why I couldn't find the right gear and shifter was extremely loose. I was wrong. Looked at everything that it could be aside from the tranny, but came to the conclusion that I have a bad transmission. I'm not familiar with transmission internals, but I hear the term syncros thrown around, and that could be what goes out on the trannies. Ultimately replacing or repairing the transmission is the solution.

I had the same problem in a 240sx that i had before my civic, it would be hard to shift into first when i was stopped. Like someone posted earlier all i did was slowly let out on the clutch and it would slip right into gear. I changed the clutch thinking that may have been the problem, but the problem was still there. Later on i swapped in an sr20 along with a new tranny the problem was gone. My guess is that its the transmission in your car also. Theres my 2 cents, hope it helped
