1st gear is gone, clutch or transmission troubles ?
So…had a wonderful day yesterday, here’s just a part of it
To begin with 1st gear has been a little difficult to get into gear when the car is not at a complete stop, no real problem, just need to make sure that I’m stopped to get it into gear.
Now whenever I attempt to put the car into 1st gear it grinds, I can force it into gear…but
Here is what I’ve found:
Car running:
grinds going into 1st gear
a little resistance going into any of the gears
Driving car:
1st gear is the same
as long as I shift without a delay it goes right into gear
if I take my time between shifts I get some resistance going into gear
Car not running
shifts like butter no problems at all
My thoughts would be that the clutch is having an issue, maybe something came loose, a rivet came undone…or the Clutchnet Kush-lok clutch is slightly thinner than it should be and I’ve just worn it down.
Parts installed in the transmission area:
JDM Final drive
Clutchnet Kush-loc clutch
ACT HD pressure plate, H0-25
Comptech Al flywheel
I've obtained a slightly used ACT Exteme disk from Rboosted717, and am currently planning on having Chris assist me in pulling the transmission and inspecting and replacing any broken or worn parts.
Any thoughts?
Austin

Well if its a clutch problem, I would think it would happen frequently, no matter what gear you are in. If its your synchros, you tend to find the problem at particular instances. Very similar to what my problem was, and for ***** and giggles, I switched to GM Synchromesh tranny fluid. I have not had a single bit of grind in 1st or 3rd gear since. I know its not a permanent fix, but atleast it seems to be helping lessen the wear on the tranny until I can get it checked out the right way. Might be worth a shot as a temporary band aid.

i dont have a 5th gear in my new tranny, but i would rather have no 5th compared to no 1st
i vote for taking it off. and there isnt much way you can fix it with out taking off the tranny.
i would help if i wasnt busy this week. i could come up on the weekend or friday, but i know u want to get this sucka fixed

looks like we're going to try it on Saturday, Chris told me about your problem, sounds like you and I are having a great weekend with clutch/transmissions
We were just too tired when I finally made it back into town, hopefully we can start it early Saturday morning, and have it done fairly early.

Austin,
I've recently experienced the same symptoms.
Dropped the clutch at 9,500RPMs...don't ask.
Found out that the pressure plate broke and caused the pressure plate to not completely disengage the clutch. Thus when it was moving it wouldn't go into gear and if it did, it was really, really rough.

I would think it was the pressure plate as well from what you describe. The reason it is shifting fine when you are moving makes me believe that since I can drive my car without touching the clutch pedal once its moving (not that I drive like that, but I can).
